12-Orono Weekly limes, Wednesday, November 22, 1989 Orono 4-H Club completes project Fire Calls for the Town of Newcastle by Elisha Bo! The Orono 4-H Club has now completed the "Good Foods Fast" project. Our seventeen members learned that we can prepare foods fast and still eat nutritiously. In Meeting 2 we took a look at the advantages advantages and disadvantages of convenience convenience foods. We cooked 3 different different kinds of macaroni and cheese; one from scratch, one frozen and a Kraft dinner. We determined the preparation time, cost per serving and how appetizing each was. In Meeting 3 we learned how to make meals quickly and how to have them look and taste good. We made Fast Fixin' Salad and Pizza Style Frittata. In Meeting 4 we took the mystery out of our microwaves. We found out how it cooks the food and why food needs standing time. To find the hot spots in our microwave we made s'mores (graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate pieces). We also made meatloaf in a mug. Some thought it needed more spices. In Meeting 5 we learned what kind of cookware can be used in the microwave. We also had to judge cookware and give reasons for placing placing them the way we did. Barbara Weise, Rural Organizations Specialist for Durham East, gave us the official placing. We made parmesan chicken and quick rice pudding. Meeting six was a ' party at Tamara and Katrina Kents. We played games and taste tested three different cakes: ready made frozen, from scratch and a microwave mix. We also tried coloured popcorn. We handed in, our books which marked the end of our project of Good Foods Fast. Our thanks to Orono United Church for the use of the kitchen and to 'Providence Show's Women's Institute for supporting supporting our club. Pines students denounce drinking and driving A number of studentsTrom the „ , ^ . Pines Senior Public school have submitted their views on drinking and driving. They are printed below. Let us pay heed. Don't Drink and Drive I think the drunk drivers should stay off the roads if they are drunk. When I get my drivers licence I will wear a seat belt when I drive. 1 will try to stay away from the drunk drivers. by Joe Miller Drunk Driver I think nobody should give teenagers or anybody booz.e. I had a brother who almost died because of a drunk driver. Mike was very badly hurt. He knew a girl who died where he works. Please people, don't drink or drive or your life might be wasted, or worse somebody elses. Miss Carolyn Hinton Drink! Why drink and drive? You should have the brains to not drink and then drive. Drunk! You should have the sense to phone somebody and tell them to pick you ' up. Just this weekend a friend in my class lost his brother. He died by being being hit by a drunk driver. What a shame! John Grant Drinking and Driving In a couple of years I'm going to be driving and all 1 need is to be hit' by a drunk driver and have my life wasted. I think people who drink 1 should have a taxi take them to where they are going so they don't kill anyone else in this world. There are too many people that are so young who are now dead. Also people people who drink and drive and kill someone someone should be put in jail for such stupidity. It's too bad ,for, those people who have lost someone in their family because ,of drunk drivers. Miss Melissa Todd Don't Drink and Drive Next August I will be getting my drivers licence and 1 don't want to . get killed by a drunk driver. If people people have been drinking they must not drive. They can take a cab, walk or have a friend drive them home. I still remember how I felt when my cousin Jim Seymour, was killed in an accident involving a drinking driver. George" Stonehurg Drunk Drivers Why would you drink and drive? It just kills your brain cells. It gets you in lots of trouble. If you drink and drive you could injure someone someone or kill someone. If I ever lost someone in my family I would want the police to put the person in jail for years and take their licence away. Dave Allison Don't Drink and Drive In two years I will be getting my licence and I don't think I'll feel safe on the road with drunk drivers. Willy Worth Drinking and Driving There are so many drunk drivers today. People have got killed from drunk drivers and in the hospitals. 1 hope when 1 get my drivers licence that a drunk driver doesn't hit me. I think drunk drivers should be punished more and put in jail. Laurie Hale Don't Drink and Drive 1 will be getting my licence in 2 years. 1 don't want me or anybody ■ else to be hurt or killed because of drunk drivers. 1 think that anyone that has been drunk and caused an accident should be put in jail and get their licence taken away.
