"Pay Attention, Wayne!" In the Dog House As far as Brandy, the dog I wrote about last week, is concerned, I'm in the dog house. He was quite upset that I had indicated indicated he was rather decrepit. Brandy admits we may be of an age and that perhaps his hearing is a little little faint and his eye sight a little on the short side .... but when Billy comes to brush his teeth they are not store teeth. But worst of all I degraded the dog. "I'm not the Cocker side of the Spaniel family," he states, "I'm. a Springer". Well Brandy this is the retraction and 1 do hope you live a long and healthy life. With our trouble with Brandy now put aside I could continue but incidents are some of the short side this week. Perhaps due to the fact that it was a busy week-end with the Lighting of Christmas and the Craft, Show in Orono and well over an hour at Buster's Roadhouse in Newcastle. The Newcastle trip centred •around' the music of Eric Lambier who was playing at Busters and who recently had his first record released. released. There is more to come on this talented boy who formerly lived in the Kendal area. ' We could report some on birding The Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs of The Great Pine Ridge were^ recently honoured with the' last of many awards earned during the 1988-89 season. With the fine leadership of Paul Arsenault, the Kinsmen club achieved-something never heard of in the history of Kinsmen before. 100Vo of the members attended 100Vo of the general meetings last year!, This could be due to the fact that Past President Paul ran efficient efficient but productive meetings or simply because the Kinsmen feel good about the work they do. ' Whatever the reason, the accomplishment accomplishment did not go unnoticed and now there is a national attendance attendance banner displayed at their meetings. There were two individual which has been rather successful this fall and up to a week ago when Bunting and 1 tripped off to Pres- quile Park, the areas most hot spot for birds during the summer and during migration. The recent Sunday trip was in search of Purple Sandpiper and we were rewarded with the sighting of perhaps a dozen such birds. The Purple Sandpiper does visit Pr'esquile in the fall during a short period of time on their flight south for the winter along the east coast front Newfoundland south to Florida. During the summer the bird occupies occupies the most northern seaboard of Quebec north to the southern fringe fringe of Baffin Island. The dozen or so Purples were mixed in with at least a couple hundred hundred Dunlins. It's interesting that a couple of Hudsonian Godwits have been hanging around the shoreline of the park for at least a month. It is an uncommon bird for this area with its migration path through the centre centre of the continent. We are still - looking for Wild Turkeys north of Pontypôol with no success. We had thought on Sunday tramping around in the area wc would have noted turkey tracks in the snow but there were none to see. I'm just not looking in the right place, apparently. Kinsmen who were recognized for their fine achievements last year as well. Kin Danny Stacheruk won the Durham Zone Public Speaking Award and competed admirably in the District competition. Fittingly, Paul Arsenault was honoured with the Outstanding President of the Zone Awards for 1988-89. The Kinettes also earned their share of awards last year. In March, they were presented with the Zone service award for the Youth Dances they host 5 times a year. In November, it was announced that although the GPR Kinettes were the smallest club in the Zone, they had earned the Outstanding Club of the Zone Award for 1988-89! Individual achievements included Kinette Bev Stacheruk winning the Durham Zone Public Speaking Graduation GUY, Karen Joy Gillian Karen Joy Gillian Guy recently graduated from York University, with the Honours Degree in Bachelor of Fine Arts. Karen, who is the daughter of Len and Dorothea Guy, was educated, at Orono Public School and Bowmanville High School. "Forget It Charlie" comments Hamre On a suggestion from staff on Monday to the Town's committee meeting suggesting consideration of a Gift List Program, Counc. Funds are provided through gifts from industries, industries, service clubs and individuals. individuals. The report said if staff were to proceed with such a program a staff person would be assigned to administer administer the program with a futher cost of $4,000 for promotion. The staff report further stated that in times when demands are made on the tax dollar simply to keep up with basic services, creative revenue generation is required to ensure the quality of life continues to be enhanced. There was no support for the proposal. proposal.
