"The Future Starts Here" Last week Clarke students and staff were very shocked and sadden* ed by the death of Ken Davies, a very dear friend to us all. Derek Zander paid tribute to Ken at the funeral at Bowmanville United Church in the following eulogy. A Tribute to Ken Davies by Derek Zander Whether it is the way Kên used to smile or the way he could cheer you up with an off tune song Ken is going going to be missed and remembered by many people. Though the gymnasium, gymnasium, the halls and the classrooms at Clarke will be somewhat empty for a white. There are mapy great memories to look back on with a smile. In the gym, the visions of volleyballs being roofed roofed and basketballs being swished will always be with us. In the classrooms and halls, all of the jokes shared and school work somewhat attempted. Inside, Ken was a very strong, man that could achieve almost anything that he strived for. He excelled excelled at everything he did because of strong will power, determination and a never quit attitude. In sports, Ken was always a standout though he never liked to be considered ong. He didn't have' a conceited bone in his body and always said he was just one of the players. 1 can remember the first conversation I ever had with Ken in grade four. He arrived at my school the day before the yearly track meet and 1 said, "hey, new kid, do you think you can beat me?" He just replied, nervously, "probably not." Of course, he ended ended up beating me in every event. From then on Ken went on to achieve many feats and win many different sporting events but never did rub it in when'he won or act too unsportsmanlike when he lost. His desire to win is what made him so great but he also played to have fun and this was an inspiration to anyone who ever had the honour of being his teammate. . More importantly, Ken excelled, at being a human being and friend. He was caring and compassionate and always put his friends first. Whenever we were down he would come up to us with his funny little smile that would instantly make you feel better. Or, he would sing to you with that off tune voice of his that somehow, you loved to hear anyway. Ken just being around was uplifting to us all because he was always so full of life. It* was almost a rarity to see Ken in a bad mood and not smiling. Nothing can bring our good buddy back to us, but 1 know that he would want us all to carry on our wonderful memories of the good time we had with him. Since this tragedy happened on Remembrance Day, there are a few lines from "In Flanders Fields" that I feel represents the way Ken would feel right now: "Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high If ye break faith with us who die We shall net Sleep™?' Clarke Senior Volleyball Team Wins C.O.S.S.A. For Third Straight Year The senior boys volleyball team played an exceptional tournament on Wednesday, November 15 winning winning the Central Ontario Championships Championships for the third year in a row. Clarke defeated two teams from the Bay of Quinte area. St. Paul's from Trenton and N.A.E.C. from Cloyne, Ontario. It took a third game in each of the round robin matches for Clarke to qualify for the final while Cloyne easily defeated St. Paul's in two setting setting up an exciting final. Clarke played progressively strdnger as the tournament proceeded proceeded and had little trouble defeating Cloyne in two straight games to claim the championships. 1 The team now advances to Elliot Lake next weekend to compete for the All-Ontario championship. The te^m should be congratulated congratulated for their showing under very trying circumstances as this was the first time they had played together following the tragic loss of Ken Davies. Mike Tait, Brandon Coyle and Dustin Reid were also not 100% fit blit played well in spite of this. Treffttr Davies should be congratulated for his excellent setting setting and Ted Oaudet, Derek Zander and Shawn Sawyer for providing timely hitting and strong defense. The strength and courage of these young gentlemen should be a fine example to us all and we wish the team every success at O.F.S.S.A. Yearbook News The Yearbook Committee has not been sitting around "collecting dust". Part of this year's yearbook has already been sent away for publication. Last Tuesday, a group of students ventured out to Brighton for a Yearbook Workshop. It was a worthwhile experience since important important decisions were made about the cover and the theme. Steven Vander Schec and his eager, talented team are well on their way to producing one of the best edition ever.
