10-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, November 29, 1989 Throw-away scrap becomes useful at workshop Wood chips, paper cuttings, sawdust, scrap pine cones and much more in the scrap line became useful items at a workshop held at the Bowmanville Library last Saturday Saturday organized by Helen MacDonald in recognition of Recycling Week. The kids in attendance and there were many were excited \yith the crafts being devised out of the scrap. Bill Fraser, a sculpture from Brooklin and an teacher at the Visual Arts Centre directed the skills and imagination for the eager children, many from the Newton- ville area. Fraser points to the fact that many fine artists use scrap in their work. It was an interesting morning with the children being aware of what can be done with throw-away scrap material. Hours 8. to 5 Monday Monday through Friday. Upon receipt of hides, donors will receive a blaze orange hunting cap. Hides are tanned and used by Canadian native people to manufacture crafts. The ministry will continue to receive deer and moose jaws until December 31, 1989, at the 'above location. The information obtained front the jaws is used to assess the 1 age- and overall general condition of the animals harvested. Donating hunters will receive a successful deer and moose hunters crest and a chance on a draw for hunting equipment and hunting trips. Obituary Francis Nobel (Frank) McCallum A former mayor of Oshawa, Francis Nobel (Frank) McCallum died on Wednesday, November 22, 1989 at the Oshawa General Hospital. He was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Me,Callum and came to Oshawa from Toronto in 1928 to play baseball- for General Motors of Canada. In 1934, Mr. McCallum was one of the first car transport operators in Oshawa. He retired in 1954 after selling the company to Roy Thomson Thomson Associates in Toronto, Mr. McCallum was a councillor with, the City of Oshawa for 10 years and served as the mayor of the city for four years. A past president of the Canadian Trucking Association, and a past president of the Ontario Trucking Association, he was also a member of the OTA., He was a president of the Oshawa Curling Club and a member of the Oshawa Golf Club. He served on . the board of the Oshawa Senior Citizens Club, and was on the board of Parkview Place. ; ' He was past president of the Oshawa Kiwanis Club and held the post of, chairman of the Crippled Children's Center in Oshawa when it was built. Mr. McCallum also served on the board of the Simcoe Hall Worhen's League and the Eastview-Boys' and Girls' Club. He was a 32nd-degree Mason of the blue lodge and a member of the Oshawa Scottish Rite Club. For his' work with the local ball clubs, he was made an honorary member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43. For 40 years, Mr. McCallum was a member of the Oshawa Hunt Club. He is survived by his wife, the former Marguerite N. Parris, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Parris of : Orchard Park, N.Y., whom he married in 1922; a daughter, Mrs. L.R. Sawyer (Peggy); four grandchildren, Michael, Frank and Steven Sawyer and Mrs. Peter Vaughan (Barbara) of Burlington; eight grandchildren, Heather, Steven, Shawn and Scott Sawyer, Megan and Kristen Sawyer, Jeffery and Catherine Vaughan. Mr. McCallum is survived by one sister, Mrs. David Laird of Toronto. Toronto. Three brothers, W.G. (Bert) Mc- . Callum of Oshawa, Hiram E. (Hi) McCallum, an ex-mayor of Toronto, Toronto, and C.W. (Clarence) McCallum of Edmonton Alta.; and a sister Mac (Mrs. Harold Rosser) of Toronto, all died before him. A funeral service was held in the chapel at the Armstrong Funeral Home on Friday, November 24, 1989, at 3 p.m., followed by cremation. cremation.
