On Wednesday, June 14th, this year, at about 11:15 a.m. a Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision occurred on Regional Road 23, 1 km. North of the 13th Concession of Scugog. A woman was driving south with her two sons aged 3 and 4 years when a vehicle (ravelling northbound northbound hit her head on. As the result of this collision the 4 year old boy died in Sick Childrens Hospital 2 days later. The mother and other child were seriously injured. injured. The driver of the other vehicle fled fled after the collision. He has now been identified as: Kenneth Arthur HUDSON, alias Thomas HOWDEN, D.O.B. March 1,1960. He was also known to be using a drivers licence in the name of Robert S. MANCHESTER. Ribbon Cutting Ceremony The regular Board meeting was held last night at Hastings Public School to officially open the new wing of the school. Many parents, teachers, and other members of the community, along with officials of the Board and a representative of the Ministry of Education attended the warm and informal ceremony which preceded the regular Board meeting. Roseneath Centennial Public School Native Liaison Program A delegation from Roseneath Centennial Public | School updated trustees on the native liaison program program which started at the school three years ago with support from the Board and from the Ministry of Indian Affairs. The program ,is designed to increase the self-esteem of native students at the school, provide them with a positive role model, strengthen their knowledge of n'ative culture, develop more native curriculum resources, and foster mutual understanding between between natives and non-natives. The program has been so successful that the native liaison person is now being being called on to bririg the program to other schools in t^ie Board. Religion in Schools Retired teacher, Ronnie Poole, delivered a presentation to the Board requesting they examine a brief from the Kent County Board concerning the use o(, the Lord's Prayer in public schools, that the Board establish programming that would include the Lor^'l* Prayer, and that proper quiet areas be established for those who wish to opt out of such programming. Trustees voted'to send a transcript of the presentation to Education Committee. The Ministry df Éducation Éducation banned the exclusive uset>f the Lord's Prayer in all publiq school opening ceremonies last year following a ruling by the Ontario Supreme Cpurt. Workplace Harassment A detailed document outlining procedures to deal with workplace harassment was referred to Personnel Personnel Committee. The document first began as an initiative of the Affirmative Affirmative Action Committee and dealt with sexual harassment, but, after review by all the employee groups in the Board, it was decidéd to expand the policy to include other potential forms of harassment such as racial or ethnic harassment. Special Education Report Trustees voted to officially change the description of some students from trainable retarded to "developmentally challenged." The Metropolitan Toronto Board, in a letter to the Northumberland and Newcastle Board, had suggested the term "Developmentally Handicapped." Handicapped." Special Education Committee Committee Chairperson, Mike Slocombe, pointed out that the committee members felt ihe new designation - was "a much more positive term." As well, trustees resolved that, in future, classes for trainable retard- ' ed students now be referred to as Special Education classes. Concerns About New Provincial Pooling Bill A new provincial bill that will see , industrial and commercial assessment assessment shared with separate school boards has passed second reading in the Provincial Legislature and is now heading for committee review before final passage. Trustees and administration expressed concerns about the bill and plan to ask the Province to ensure that the Province Province will compensate public school boards for the loss in revenue.
