Wins Medal at Sectional Twelve year old Tracy Eames of the Orono Figure Skating Club Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, Letter to the Editor Npv. 24 1989 skated very well at the Eastern Ontario Ontario Sectional Championships, held in Brockville on November "Annie" The community was again saddened saddened last week through another fatal accident which claimed the life of Annie Cathcart as she crossed the road to her mail box in front of her sixth line home. Annie, as she was affectionately known, was a correspondent for this newspaper from sometime in the mid 1950s, Her purpose in writing the weekly column, she often mentioned, was to publicize the events of her church, the Kendal United Church, her community and its people. It takes many words to describe Annie, independent, with a sense of purpose, a wry sense of humour, dedicated and with a quiet dignity. She could also be curt when miffed. We will always want to remember Annie as she was in our brief weekly associations with her, Annie and her husband Garland, Who predeas- ed her, have always been in our minds as the "salt of the earth" . Of late years Annie often spoke of her readers of which she had many based on the continuing and many comments we have received here at the office. The word at the Times was 'print it as Annie wrote it'. We would like to share briefly some of the incidents that linger by Rev. Marg West I'd like to continue this week with more scriptures pertaining to our terny Satan and how we can overtake overtake him. In Ephesians 5:12 it says, "For we wrestle not against flesh and bldod, but against principalities, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." If we go back to verse 12, we see that it's not flesh and blood we wrestle or fight with (not people) but spiritual wickedness or evil 16th-19th. She was third overall after figures and freeskate in the Pre-Novice Ladies A category. Well done Tracy! Letter to the Editor Dear Roy On hearing the sad hews of the death of Annie Cathcart, many memories of her have come to mind. Most of the memories revolve around the life of Kendal United Church where Annie and her husband husband Garland Cathcart attended, supported and often led the congregation congregation in a quiet but firm sort of way. There was seldom a special occasion occasion service that Annie didn't rise to tell a story to the folk gathered, often with its origins based in Western Canada where she'd grown up. She could take a childhood event and apply it to some portion of the bible, bringing it to life. On Sunday School award days, each child who had attended faithfully, received a wrapped gift which had been selected and purchased purchased by Annie on behalf of the Sunday School. 1 recall that the gifts, always religious pictures of Bible story books were wrapped and tied with a string. On the inside of each book she had carefully printed the child's name, the year and the reason for the award. Even though she had no children very sober wouldn't you, in fact you'd probably stay right inside your house with the doors locked until it was caught. That's the same soberness we should have about the devil, not fear of him but to realize he's our enemy and to know how he attacks, and what his weapons are. In John 10:10, Jesus said that the thief cometh not, but for to steal (your money, your family, your health, or anything he wants to( and to kill, (by accident, disease, any way he can) and to destroy again any way he can, alcohol, drugs, nicotine. "But Praise the Lord" the rest of the verse says, "but I - Jesus am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." Jesus gave His life on Calvary for you and me that we might have eternal life and have it abundantly. I'm striving every day to have what Jesus said 1 could have and to be more like Him. Remember 1 have the same enemy you do. Jesus said in Hosea 4:6, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because they have rejected rejected knowledge, I also will reject thee." If we reject throw away God's knowledge, He will reject us. II Timothy 2:15 tells us to, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." Study God's word and find Out what it means, then you will be able to rightly divide the word of truth. Comments or Questions, Write Box 179, Orono, of her own, she had shared her knowledge, her teaching skills, pioneer spirit and love with the children of the church. She was reserved, yet articulate and could often be seen taking notes in church for her weekly edition of the Kendal News, printed in this newspaper. In her columns she expressed the joys and sorrows of the small community, community, praised people .for their achievements and chided a society that sometimes fell short of her expectations expectations and high standards. Being a writer myself, I admire the drive it takes to produce a column column week after week for more than 35 years. I don't know the exact number of years she wrote, but it seemed like forever as she chronicled chronicled the lives of people in the Kendal area. Annie faced many crisis in her lifetime and finally ended up virtually virtually alone, the last of her family able to live on her own. She carried within her the strength of her belief in God and the hope of another spring. spring. In one of her last columns she confided that she'd spent $40 on spring bulbs and God willing she'd see them bloom in the spring of 1990. God had other plans for Annie and her wide circle of friends and neighbors will miss her smile,' her homespun wisdom, and her writing. There will be an empty seat on the north side of the church on Sunday, Sunday, but her gifts will continue to manifest themselves in the community community she loved. Sincerely Peggy L. Christian Corner over Annie's articles like the irrate author threatening legal action if we didn't stop that person summarizing summarizing their book which was copyrighted. Fortunately Annie had reached the last chapter which was completed the following week. And then there was the time when Annie predicted another major major flood in Port Hope to happen in the very near future. Her prediction was backed up with past history. Three days after the column appeared appeared the flood happened causing some $2 million in damage. ' Most recently Annie had suggested, suggested, so Elaine and Chris thought, that this article was Annie's last and that she was moving. moving. Some minor changes were made with the result that fyinie was up and down their backs for the next two weeks. Annie',s further comment will never be forgotten, "I just wanted to let my readers know that I would not be writing the Kendal News so they wouldn't waste their money buying the paper because there was nothing else in it." With all her other attributes she told it às she saw it. "Annie" . . . you left much in this-community . . .. you. will be missed by your readers and all those who knew you -, . . you dear soul. spirits. Now most people, church people, are not even aware of or believe in a real Devil. They may have or may not have been taught about him, but very few ever take any thought about him except to make jokes regarding him.
