4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, November 29, 1989 SPOR Ontario Champions honoured at banquet On November 17th, a banquet and dance was held at the Orono Arena Community Centre in honour of the Orono PeeWee Baseball team, winners of the 1989 PeeWee "D" Ontario Baseball Championship. The special event, organized by the parents, was attended attended by over 80 people, including head table guests Mr. Ross Stevenson Stevenson M.P., Regional Councillor Diane Harare, Orono Athletic Association President Mr. Cord Lowery and Mrs. Lowery as well as the evening's M.C. Bert Reid. A table was set up to display the team's trophies, medallions and congratulatory messages. In order to thank and identify our many sponsors, all the team shirts were hung on the wall behind the head table. Following Mr. Stevenson's message of congratulations to the team, everyone sat down to a delicious roast beef dinner served by the Orono Figure Skating Club. After dinner, the first speaker was Diane Harare, who, on behalf of the Town of Newcastle, eloquently eloquently congratulated all the team members and the coaching staff and then presented beautiful Town of Newcastle Medals of Achievement to the players and coaches. Local Councillor Frank Stapleton was unable to attend the event but he sent a letter of congratulations congratulations which was read by Cheryl Reid. One of the evening's highlights was the unveiling by Cord Lowery of a large banner honouring the Orono PeeWees and this will be prominently displayed, in the Arena. Gord also unveiled a banner in honour of the 1957 Orono Intermediate Intermediate "D" Baseball Team who also won the Ontario Championship. Championship. This banner which was accepted by Don Mercer a member of the team and it will also be hung in the Orono Arena, The PeeWee Baseball Team in turn presented a plaque with the Team's picture and all the, team member's names to Gord who accepted it on behalf of the Athletic Association. The plaque plaque is now on'display in the trophy case at the Arena. Coach Peter Landers and Manager Pete Maartense made thank you speeches and they, as well ■ as Assistant Coach Craig Houston, were presented with beautifully framed needle point pictures pictures commemorating the Championship. Championship. As well, each player received a miniature version of the needle point. A special thanks to parents Rory Woods and Mary Houston for these great gifts. Manager Pete Maartense, on behalf of the team, presented the players with a frame containing a team picture as well as an individual picture. Thanks to the generosity of the parents, every team member also received a suitably engraved Championship Championship ring and these were presented by Coach Pete Landers. Following the presentations, many more guests arrived for the very successful dance. During the dance, a special presentation was made to the Team's Sponsors with each sponsor receiving a Team picture signed by all the players. The Orono PeeWees would like to thank the parents for organizing this event. Thank you also to our very capable M.C. Bert Reid,' our D.J. Randy Cowan and a special thank you to Earl Taylor for all his assistance and for his generous donation to the team. Orono Novice win away but lose at home On Tuesday, November 21st, Orono travelled to Baltimore to play their home team #2. Baltimore started off strong scoring scoring within the first two minutes. The rest of the first period was end to end action with both goalies making good saves. With twenty- two seconds left in the first period, Orono got on the scoreboard with Murphy Irvine putting one past the Baltimore goalie, assisted by Andrew Andrew Reid. The first ten minutes of the second period saw both teams trading rushes and many shots. At 13:05 Steve Foster on a breakaway scored to put Orono ahead 2-1. Baltimore came back within three minutes making it a tied game. The players on the Orono bench decided enough is enough, let's turn it on. And in doing doing so scored three quick goals. Scoring for Orono was Alan Robb assisted by Steve Foster, Steve Foster assisted by Alan Robb and Mike Morrison, Jamie Richter assisted by Murphy Irvine and Andrew Andrew Reid. - '. In the third, Baltimore tried their best but were unable to get one by the Orono goalie, Ryan Schoep, who turned in a good performance. At 12:17 in the third Steve Foster scored assisted by Alan Robb. Giving Giving Orono a 6-2 lead which turned out to be the final score. Friday, November 24th saw Col- bourne come to Orono for a U.C.H.L. Novice game. Within the ' first five minutes Orono had two goals. Scoring the first was Alan Robb assisted by Andrew Andrew Reid. The second saw Andrew Reid scoring on a breakaway. It appeared Orono players thought they had this one in the bucket, letting up on their checking and skating. The Colbourne coach seeing this regrouped his players and within five minutes of play had their first of nine goals. Colbourne got two more to lead 3-2 at the end of the first. During the second period Orono still could not find their skating and checking, and it showed on the scoreboard, as Colbourne scored two more goals; Score at the end of the second was 5-2 Colbourne. The first half of the third period was no better as Colbourne scored two more.. At the halfway _ mark Orono finally scored one by Andrew Andrew Reid assisted by Bobby Witheridge. But the determined Colbourne team got two more goals making the final score 9-3 for Colbourne. Colbourne. Next game Orono Novice play at home, Friday, December 1st, against Bowmanville at 8:15. Job Printing Orono Weekly Times . 983 5301 Orono, Ontario Orono Roughley Tykes defeat Bowmanville The Orono Roughley Insurance Tyke team hosted the Bowmanville VIP Hairstyling team this past Saturday afternoon and came away with a 5-4 victory. After last weeks loss to Bowman- ville's IDA Drugs team, we knew we would have to play some good hockey to beat these Bowmanville teams. That meant that for this game we were mentally prepared for our opponents. "The first period saw the majority of the scoring. Early in the game Orono's Bobby Witheridge fired a puck into the Bowmanville goal to give us the lead. Assisting on the play, were Jonathan Black and Jake Bonnetta. Bowmanville wasted no time in evening the score as they got one past Orono's net minder Matthew Matthew Reid. The action was end to end, as Orono's Michael Gibson shot a beauty past the Bowmanville goalie: Assisting on this score wer; Greg Bester and Kyle Moore.- Wouldn't you know it, Bowmanville Bowmanville scored again and then Orono's Bobby Witheridge again gave us the lead from Brad Copping. Just as the first period ended Bowmanville Bowmanville scored once more to close the period out, the score tied at 3. The second period action was exciting exciting as well. Orono came on strong to score two in a row, the first by Bobby Witheridge unassisted and the second by Bobby as well, this one from Greg Shetler. With just seconds remaining in the second period Bowmanville managed managed one more past Orono's Matt (Continued page 7)
