Town again to oppose Hydro in upping capacity Through a motion by Counc. Harare the Town of Newcastle is to have staff and legal counsel oppose the increase of capacity of the first nulcear fired generator at the December 7th hearing with the Atomic Energy Control Board. Ontario Hydro is to ask the AECB to grant a licence to increase the capacity of the generator from 1 percent to 10 percent of capacity at a meeting, on December 7th. Counc. Harare noted that only a draft agreement for fire protection has been considered and that the emergency evacuation plan has yet to be approved by the municipality. In speaking with Sue Stickley of • Ontario Hydro she said there has been no problems with the opera- ■ tion of the reactor or generator and that Hydro was ready to increase capacity to 10 percent. Approval was given on Monday night for the Mayor to hold the Mayor's Levee on New Years Day in the new Bowmanville Recreation Centre. The Town has referred a letter and supporting data from the Canadian Union of Public Employees outlining outlining their concern over the possible privatization of garbage disposal. A new sub-station is to be built in Newcastle Newcastle Village, while another substation substation is to be Converted to 13.8 kv. Council on Monday deleted a specific site, Vanstone's Mill, as the site for a proposed Tourist and Information Information Centre. The Town has approved in principle the setting up of such a Centre, which is to be further further debated during budget deliberations. Counc. Harare asked for the deletion as there was plerity of time for consideration for a site, which . could be the Milt site in the end. Michael Creighton has been officially officially appointed Fire Chief for the Town of Newcastle. Creighton has been the acting fire chief over a number of months. Mayor Hubbard said the new chief had passed all tests and that his record had been a good role _ model. "You have many problems", said Hubbard, and there is need for harmony between the volunteer firefighters and permanent staff. "We want harmony throughout the system", she said.
