Honoured for service to Clarke Museum Council denies change back to Hale's Road Ray Dickson, who has been treasurer for the Clarke Museum and Archives for the past 19 years, was honoured Monday night with presentations for his service. Dickson is retiring as treasurer but will continue on the Finance Advisory Committee of the Museum Board. The presentation was made on behalf of the Board by Helen Schmid, another long-time active member. In speaking with Mark Jackman, curator, and as pointed out by Helen Schmid, Dickson was always available to help in any museum event and had been an efficient treasurer. Frank Stapleton on behalf of the Town presented Dickson with a Town Plague for his 19 years of service to the board and the community. community. Council members on Monday denied a request from Jim and Bill Hale of the Newtonviile area to change Stapleton Road between Highway 2 and the fourth line back to the name, Hale's Road. In July of 1987 council had approved approved the naming of the road Stapleton Road from the former Hale Road and the Hales were making making a bid to change the name back., The request was made both in a letter letter and a presentation to council on Monday. Jim Hale said the name Hale's Road' dated back to his great grandfather grandfather arid provided a document showing the naming of a bridge on the road as Hale's bridge. Jim Hale also stated that the Hales would be satisfied if the road was named' The Stapleton-Hale Road. During a brief debate of the issue . Counc. Hamre noted that the • change to Stapleton Road was made by council on the submission of a sizeable petition from residents of the area. She said it was not a feud between two families, "the whole .community wants the name Stapleton", she said. Counc. Bowmanville. The new rate affects metered spaces in the three Towrt- Parking lots as well as at meters along the streets in the community. The present rate of 25c. per ho.ur is being raised to 50c. per hour. As well those now paying a monthly. rate of $32.00 per space in the lots will be charged $50.00 monthly. The Town has a total of 49;601 square feel in their three lots which . generates for the province, under the new tax, a sum of $49,601. A report to council notes that last year the Town took revenue of $48,852 from the lots and street parking. It was also noted that the provincial tax would take all revenue at the ,25c. rate and thps recommended the increase to .50c: The Town has been issuing 250 monthly passes to local residents for use of the parking lots. It appears that Metro Toronto and the Region of Durham have, behind closed doors, hammered out a tentative agreement in which Metro would have dumping rights at a Region landfill site in the Whitevale area. Details of the agreement have not been made public although regional councillors have had copies of the agreement since last Friday. The agreement will be dealt with this Wednesday at both the Region of Durham council and by the whole of Metro councils. The agreement sets rates which will be charged to Metro per tonne for the use of the proposed Regional landfill. A recent consultants report has given the green light to the suitability suitability of the Whitevale site. It is being stated that the site could be in operation in 1991 and would continue as an interim site until the year 1996. The chairman of Metro states all parties are looking for smaller sites as interim sites until such a time as a large site could be developed. The Brock West site is expected to be filled within a year, Most of the Region of Durham uses the Brock West site. ORONO MAN HIT BY CAR William Coles, 62, of Main Street, Orono, was Struck by a car while jogging on the 6th line of Clarke, east ot Highway 115 near the Exotic Cat World on'Saturday about noon. According to police Coles stepped in front of the car while jogging. Coles was rushed to Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville with two broken legs and head injuries. He was later taken to St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, where he was in critical condition. Sister Doris Wannan, Alice Hooey and Hattie Wilson greet visitors to the annual Heather Rebekah Christmas Sale and Tea. • It was another Successful event with a good'crowd in attendance and sales brisk for horhe baking, and the many crafts on sale.
