Emily Tufts of Orono has been awarded a Canadian Millennium Scholarship in the amount of $3,000 for the 1999/2000 academic year. Emily is in her second year at Laurier University in Waterloo, and is currently studying communications and history. This scholarship, is one of more than 75,000 awards the Canadian Millennium Scholarship Foundation is making to young Canadians as part of Canada's celebration of the new Millennium. From Around Home by Roy Forrester During the count down to the life of a new year it was as If something was to happen. Some would have us believe it was a new millennium, millennium, a new century, a new decade and definitely the entry of the Y2K bug. Interesting Indeed with the monitoring of the new year as it passed round the globe prior to coming to Canada. As to the new millenni-' um, the new century and decade we will likely cele-' brate them again in another 361 days when the calendar calendar reads 2001. I am of the school that the new Millennium must await the count down through the year 2000 and that the Millennium starts with the year 2001. Why not celebrate the Millennium once again and enjoy the blaze of colour from around the world as we did Friday evening. Surely Mel Eastman will still be around to fire off the salvo of colour. Most encouraging of all the celebrations we saw and read about was the fact the large crowds were peaceful. They were enjoying enjoying a night of revelry with their friends and neighbours. neighbours. It was above all - peaceful. As far as the Y2K debacle debacle it was some three years ago that.Peter De Jager first sounded the alarm of computer computer failures thus shutting shutting down industiy and commerce. It was all to happen when computers failed to recognize the year 2000 with the dawn of the new year . last Saturday morning. The world, of course, watched with interest for the outcome of the dreaded Y2K bug. It was no more than a few cliches that were minor in nature- and easily corrected. corrected. And this was the case around the world. De Jager has been reported to have stated don't judge too soon. But over the years much has been done to prepare prepare for the 'Bug" where it was necessary to do so. Certainly there has been much development and improvement in computers computers over the past three decades. It is astounding but still many of the computers computers are continuing service service for which they were < Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January b, 2(XX) - Electronic equipment program Beginning yesterday, January 4, 2000, the Region of Durham Waste Management Facility on Ritson Road North in Oshawa will be the site of a new Electronic Equipment Recycling program, the first of its kind by the Region of Durham. Peter Watson, Manager of Waste Management for Durham Region says: 'The Electronic Equipment Recycling program is just one of the initiatives the Region originally designed. There is little doubt that the words of De Jager of the melt down did create a fever of fear as has been noted in the past few months and weeks. One would also suspect an element element of commercialism in the announcement. Certainly the computer industry has fared well. We had every confidence confidence that the newly formed private Power Corporation operating the hydro plants In Clarington and Pickering would continue continue generating and that hydro supply would not meet with any Interruption. As we understand the Corporation shed all it's existing computers replacing replacing them with a total new line of computers. Of course all Y2K compatible. The Power Corporation is not the only enterprise to take advantage of the Federal government's total one year write off. A financial financial benefit to those companies companies updating their computerized computerized equipment. The whole 'new year' package made for a lot of interesting discussion prior to, during and after the peeling of the silver bells. Don't lose any more sleep over the Y2K debacle and look forward to another swing of entertainment in 361 days. All the best for the new year.
