ALEX SHEPHERD Tonight when we sit; for dinner few of us will contemplate contemplate how the food on our tables got there. Durham, being both urban and rural, reflects this disconnection. Urban children often think food simply comes from the supermarket. They are somewhat somewhat oblivious to our local farm communities and the commitment farm families and their employees, make toward our nourishment and survival I've worked on farms myself. I understand the long hours and constant commitment commitment needed to run farming operations. In Canada the most efficient efficient farming operations have been family ones. Why? Well these families have been brought up in a tradition of understanding the daily obligations obligations needed and the need to work as a unit. Long hours and no holidays holidays are often the rule on the family farm. And being constantly constantly in each other's face requires an acceptance of business conditions that only families can adjust to. I have tremendous respect for children brought up on a farm. They are never at a loss for something to do, they do well in school and from my experience rarely get into trouble. I along .with some of my colleagues have organized a Farm Fajnily Tribute to take place at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, January 18 between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. It's amazing; as soon as you mention the plight of some of our farming communities communities very quickly successful entertainers, who have a connection connection with rural life, donate time to increase awareness of problems on family farms and rural Canada. Gordon Lightfoot, Burton Cummings, Ronnie Hawkins, Randy Bachman, Sylvia Tyson, Sharon, Lois and Bram, Fred Penner, Jimmy Rankin (Rankin Family), Michael Burgess, Wide Mouth Mason, Big Sugar and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra are just part of the line up. Tickets are $20, $15 and $10. The event is not about making money. But it is about giving our urban cousins a chance to take a step back and contemplate the commitment farm families families make toward our nation's quality of life. While agricultural production production continues to increase in Canada the actual number of family farm operations continues continues to decline. The average age of the Canadian farmer is around 65. Friday January 7, Orono played the second of two games against Bobcaygeon. The game was a real-nail biter from start to finish. At one time it was thought anybody could farm. Today, with sophisticated marketing concepts, and the widespread use of technology, farmers have to have a wealth of knowledge. They deal with fluctuations in commodity markets often determined by events on the other side of the world. Then there is the proper use of herbicides herbicides and other chemicals as farmers work toward creating creating a more environmentally sustainable business. And they have to be business business people as well. If you can farm successfully, likely, you can work almost any business business successfully since farming farming has more variables than any other business I know. I'm pleased to be associated associated with a group working to increase awareness of family farms. We should all take time to think about it as well. I urge all of you to come out to the Air Canada Centre and show your support for Canada's family farms. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and the Air Canada Centre box office.
