Ç Orono Weekly Times» Wednesday, January 19, 2000 - 3 FROM AROUND HOME Loving you always, Mommy & Daddy Plans Continued from page 2 ■ ,, Of the many options being suggested, "the one I like .best is that the Region of Durham remain and Clarington stand on its own the way we are," said Hamre in her address to the Orono and District Community Association (ODCA) Monday evening. It makés sense if ■ Oshawa and Whitby want to amalgamate, and Ajax and Pickering do the same, "but each proposal leads to further questions," she stated. The suggestion was made to do away with the regional government. government. Where will the coordination coordination of service take place? asked Hamre. In the GTA? A Greater Toronto Area (GTA) government would be "less accessible and less accountable to you the taxpayer," she stated. Council meetings and elected •officials will be in Toronto. If you put a municipality like Clarington at the table with the Mississaugas' and Torontos' of the world, Clarington would not get much attention, and the money would go to where the population is, said Hamre. Regional Government allows small and large Municipalities to come together and share services, explained Hamre. "There has to be coordination coordination of cross boundary issues like social services, social housing, waste management, management, water and sewage, policing. policing. We can't operate in isolation." isolation." "No municipality, including Oshawa can afford to pay social housing on their own," she said, "we have to come together and share." "What upsets me is individuals individuals and groups running off and holding secret meetings," said Hamre at the ODCA meeting. "You play right into the Province's hands - divide and conquer. The only way is to work together as a team." This about birds this week. I even received three phone calls on the subject last Friday alone. I could start off with a brief trip along the lake- front with Bill Bunting mid week when a few ducks were sighted in the breaker- rough waters of Lake Ontario. Our first thought was entry into Darlington Park but found that changes in regulations left one's car a real hike from the lakefront. After blaming our disappointment disappointment at Darlington bn the Harris government's privatization we ventured to the lakefront in Oshawa. Yes, it was windy, chilly and breakers were sizable splashing into shore. But we were rewarded with a few ducks. The little Buffleheads, male and female, dived through the waves effort- was in reference to Mayor Diamond of Oshawa, and Mayor Arthurs of Pickering attending meetings held by Markham Mayor Don Couseiis and five other GTA mayors who devised their own restructuring plan, which they gave to the Premier Monday, January 15. The mayors suggest scrapping scrapping the four regions that ring Toronto, and that the area be divided into 12 new cities. Mayor Diamond decided to disassociate disassociate herself from that group following the Regional retreat, and neither Mayor attended the group's Friday meeting. A report on the Retreat is to be presented to (he Regional council for endorsement at its next meeting, on January 26, and then referred to all local municipalities with an invitation invitation for their responses. Having the final reports from the municipalities in by June 30, 2001, does not give them a lot of.time, considering this is an election year, and councillors will be campaigning for at least five of those months, says Hamre. Though Clarington is in good shape, since we have hired a consultant already to see what's best for Clarington. "I am quite confident," said Hamre, "when the studies come out, they will show Clarington is a very healthy community. If you take away one part of us, you will be in trouble." If Courtice were to join Oshawa, as suggested previously by the Mayor of that city, Courtice will see tax increases due to an increased level of service, and the rest of Clarington will also see tax increases because a large part of our revenue will be taken away, Hamre explained. Oshawa has no where to grow, and has their eye on the industrial industrial lands in Courtice. by Roy Forrester ^/ lessly and the flock of female Goldeneyes bobbed along In the swells. Two Redheaded Mergansers trail along after the Goldeneyes. Not that many ducks but enough to make the trip worthwhile, thought Bill and I. Crossing the street downtown Orono and meeting meeting up with Jim DaCosta he reports a big flock of Evening Grosbeaks calling in at their feeder daily. It is something that has been happening for sometime up on the Eighth Line. "And we also have a lot of Doves flying flying in," said Jim. Friday we dropped down one concession from the DaCosta's to the Rotz's on the seventh with a call from Bob. He read last weeks article article about the tight-flight of the Starling with no collisions collisions being reported. He said Joanne and he had also seen a similar flight and were equally amazed that the birds were not in collision. "How do they do it?, asked Bob. My reply had to be, "I don't know. I'll leave it to you to figure out and I'll read about it in the Times." There is a reason Geese fly in a "V" formation and it has to do with draft assisting assisting adj acent bird flight. Bob also said he finally saw the Wild Turkeys at White Road, a total of 80 and they are big birds. They have a good number of "When Clarington was brought together 25 years ago, none of the towns and villages lost their history", said Hamre. If Oshawa takes Courtice, then Courtice will lose that history. "If there became a regional city, if they are going to take us over, take us all, and each one of us will do what we did 25 years ago," Hamre stated. "Each one of us will remain one of the children in the family." jp 7 Clarington Chapter^ Oak Ridges Trail Open Forum Tues., January 25 Orono Town Hall Basement Room Information and map pertaining to the proposed proposed trail through Clarington available Public Invited Would you like to be involved? Had a call from Malcolm McKenzie from Highway 7 area stating that a Great Blue Heron Is staying the winter and wasn't it usual for the bird to have gone south. Sometime ago a Great Blue spent the winter on the small creek running through the Orono estates. It appears if food is available available the bird could well stay but it is a long shot at best. An Interesting sighting was reported from right in the Village with Klaas Schoenmaker reporting a flock of Bohemian Waxwings in their backyard on Sunday. The bird is the most colourful of the Waxwings and spends the summer northerly into the Yukon area. Klaas noted the rusty colouring under the tail and the bird does have red and yellow on the wing. It is larger than the Cedar Waxwing.
