Tuned up and concert ready These young string players are just a practice away from their public performance on Saturday, January 22, 7 p.m. in Bowmanville at the Rehoboth Christian Reformed Church, on Seugog St. This is a part of a talented group of string players from the Region of Durham and Peterborough area that call themselves the Clarington Youth string Ensemble and are under the direction of Laurie Mitchell. Mitchell says, "the energy generated by the students when their talents are brought together to rehearse or perform is exciting and invigorating. It is a group that our community can be proud of!" The Ensemble will be joined by the La Jeunesse Youth Orchestra from Cobourg for Saturday's concert. concert. Admission to the concert will be free. Board receives "A" on commission report card The Education Improvement Commission's (EIC's) report on the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board's progress in implementing amalgamation is "good news," says the Board Chairperson and Director of Education. "We are very pleased to see the ÉIC recognize the many positive accomplishments we have achieved in less than two years since the Board came into being," says Board Chairperson Catharine Tozer. "It has taken a lot of work on the part of trustees and staff to bring two organizations into one large and complex Board. This provincial review is telling us that we have done a good job in serving such a large and diverse area. "We could not have accomplished accomplished as much without the support and effort of students, students, parents, school councils councils and all of our community partners," Tozer adds. "They certainly deserve credit for their hard work, dedication, patience and support. Our students reap the benefits of this co-operative effort." "We also appreciate the Commission's insights and suggestions for ways to build on what we've already done," she says. "We have found the review to be most helpful." "The report is extremely positive," agrees Dick Malowney, Director of Education. "By now, the Commission has reviewed all of the 72 school boards in Ontario, and, therefore, has an in-depth understanding of how well all are doing in implementing the many changes in education.
