Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 26, 2000 - 13 Boat (continued from page 12) ber, a manufacturer can affix a U.S. EPÀ 2006 conformity sticker to all of its products without differentiating between types of engines. Beginning in the 2001 model-year, any outboard motor bearing a U.S. EPA 2006 sticker will meet Environment Canada's standards. Since they do not include an emissions averaging system or reduction targets, these standards fail to address the heavy pollution caused by two-stroke engines, protect the environment or limit sales. In fact, the lack of an averaging system will allow manufacturers to sell conventional conventional two-strokes in Canada at a much higher rate than in the U.S. The non-regulatory Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by Environment Canada and the Canadian Marine Manufacturers Association (CMMA) on January 17 requires only that participating companies provide emissions warranties for 2001 and later model-year engines. Individual manufacturers have been invited invited to sign on voluntarily but those that do so can terminate the agreement with 90 days notice. Since the MOU does not preclude the federal government government from regulating emissions under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, due to be passed this spring, FOCA will join the Canadian Coalition of Provincial Cottage Want to Quit Smoking? By: Clifford Frances Farm Aid Last week 1 wrote about Twink Owens and how 1 wanted wanted to be a cowboy. A girl I met at one of those parties was the daughter of a prairie farming family in Saskatchewan. The girl came from a town called Orchardville, and how it got that name is a mystery. There was not a tree of any kind for miles around. Pafty Evans took me to visit her family, and what a good time I had. We left the main road and drove miles down a country road to get to the farm. They told me, but I forget how many sections of land they owned. I think each section was 640 acres and that was something like a square mile. When we got to the house, I was introduced to her mom and dad, two brothers, a sister and her gramma on her Dad's side of the family. Right away I was taken with her grandmother. She was sitting in a swing on the front porch smoking a pipe. The next week or so were some of the best I ever remember. remember. Harvest was getting near and everyone was getting ready for the combining. Gramma, was nearly 80 so she didn't have to do much any more, so I entertained her in the evenings. She said smoking a pipe gave a better" smoke than those "tailor made" cigarettes that I smoked. • , The first night I was there, we sat outside on the swing talking. I asked if it was okay to have a drink of whisky. Gramma said sure, if she could have ône with me. She said, just pour me three fingers in a glass. No ice. No water, just whisky." Each glass she would have would be about five ounces at a time. Each night we had two glasses a piece for sure. Sometimes three and sometimes sometimes four. We would sit deep into the, night sipping whisky, smoking and talking. Gramma told me how when she' was a little girl, her dad would hook up several teams of horses and start ploughing at day-break. They would plough until lunch time, stop, at a line shack, unharness the horses and feed them, have their own lunch, harness up fresh horses, plough, and return at dark. The next day they would do the same. Gramma was convinced you only got out of farming what you put in. The example she would give was their next' door neighbour. He had run ,down buildings and poor machinery. Gramma's farm was up to date with all new trucks and good farm equipment. Well maintained by her son and grandsons. They studied the markets and planted what was in demand. Most of all they saved their money when the "bumper" crops came. We sat outside each evening and gramma would hear the grain growing and smell it ripening. I really believe she could. When one of her family came down the dusty road, she knew which son or daughter or other person it was by the dust off their wheels. Everyone drove different she said, and she was always right. We talked at length about many things. Gramma had a vast knowledge of almost everything. I would tell her things and she would say,'"is that for certain?" and I, not batting batting an eye would reply, "that's for sure." Every time ! went out west I would take a day and go see Gramma. She died several years ago, sitting on the porch in the swing looking out over her beloved farm, watching things grow. There was a cqncert in Toronto last week to help the farmer. Gramma would have been opposed to that. She always said, "you can't help those who won't help themselves." themselves." She was right.
