Clubs & Organizations Visual Arts Centre Exhibition of paintings The Visual Arts Centre of Clarington is pleased to present present the paintings of Jean Elliott as part of their ongoing exhibit of local artists at the Clarington Gallery, Bowmanville Town Hall from March 1 -31, 2000. Elliott's abstract geometric and organic canvasses emulate emulate her love of colour and pattern. The use of acrylic paint emphasizes Ms. Elliott's interest in bold, juxtaposed colour,, sometimes pure colour or mixed colour all in one painting. Patterning, for the effect of texture, gives an immediate sense of contrast with the flat, bold colour surfaces. surfaces. New to Elliott's work are her experiments with monopririting shown in abstract collages included in this exhibit, which expand her ongoing study of the abstract and the use of pure colour. Jean Elliott emigrated to Canada in 1970 from England. Her diverse artistic past included studying quilting quilting under fibre artist Marion Spanjerdt, courses in drawing, drawing, Japanese brush painting and watercolour - Dennis Cliff and Norma Pattuelli being the, most influential of her teachers. teachers. Elliott now resides in the countryside near Peterborough where many of her pieces have been exhibited exhibited in local galleries. One does not have to be a fervent monarchist to share in the Commonwealth's intense admiration for this remarkable lady. Her 1939 visit to Canada with the King cemented the national feeling so vital in the war years, and, as she later observed, "made us", in terms of helping the King overcome his shyness and stammer. Her persistent service during the ensuing years has shown how ridiculous ridiculous is the notion that "senior citizens" have no role to play in society after age 70 or 75. And her gift of raising her daughter, our present Queen, is reflected every day in thé younger Elizabeth's devotion to duty and to the well-being of all her peoples. I invite readers who share frustration in this petty and unworthy decision to write to the Chairman of Canada Post, M. Andre Ouellet, at 2701 Riverside Drive, Suite N0420, Ottawa K1A 0B1 - urging that he personally cause the issuance of a proper proper celebratory commemorative commemorative to honour a wonderful woman, Canada's Queen Mother.
