4 Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 2C, 2000 J Moves into second round of playoffs Orono Lumber ousts Sunderland two straiaht The Orono Lumber Midget. Leafs opened their 1999/2000 post-season playoff playoff drive on January 21st at Orono Arena, hosting the Sunderland Red Wings. The home squad, intent on continuing the success that produced a first place finish, were flying right from the opening faceoff. Four goals in the first ten minutes provided provided the Leafs with a healthy cushion, but to their credit, a determined Red Wing outfit never allowed this lead to look comfortable. However, the Lumbermen were not to be denied adding two goals in each of the second second and third periods for a convincing 8-2 win. Typically, Leaf scoring was well spread out. Ryan Tresise's four assists led the way while Ryan Leddy sunk two goals, Tyler Knight, Bob Witheridge, Ryan Homes, Derek Heerschop, Brandon Orr...er... Baker and Greg Bester tallied one apiece. Assists went to Tyler Robinson with two, Paul Landers, Homes, Witheridge, Witheridge, Danny Tresise and Leddy while Chris Burritt gave a fine performance in net. Game two of this three- game total points series was played the following night in Sunderland and, as one might expect, the Red Wings were out to avenge the previous previous .evening's loss, as a second second one would end their season. season. Sunderland's small, square-cornered ice surface usually produces a tight- checking match and this game was to be no exception. Neither team was able to produce much in the way of offense until Brandon Baker roofed what proved to be the winning goal just barely into the second period with Bob Witheridge and Ryan Tresise drawing assists. The Leafs added another two in the third period--Ryan Homes converting a feed from a hard-working Tyler Knight while Ryan Tresise sealed it with three 'minutes left, banging in a Witheridge rebound. Goaltender, Scott Poole made several fine saves in recording the shutout. Orono received a solid effort from every player on the ice erstwhile eliminating the Red Wings. Just the kind of effort needed if a team is to enjoy any kind of playoff success. The Leafs now await the winner of the Ops Flames/Fenelon Falls series before beginning round two of their playoffs. Ops currently currently leads the series four points to none and a win tonight (January 26th) means they'll be in town Sunday for a 6 p.m. date with our Orono Lumber midgets. wgm 1 w F ibergrate Canada's player of the week is none other than right- handed winger, Josh Dobson! Orono's Fibergrate Canada atoms had a rude awakening Saturday morning past, quickly finding themselves down 3-0 to Carnation Flowers. It was Adam Wood who finally solved the Bowmanville goalie late in the second period putting Orono on the scoreboard. Playmakers, Jonathan Koerssen and Brien Konopka set up Wood for what proved to be Orono's only goal'of the game spoiling Bowmanville's bid for a shutout. It was a close game this past Sunday night in CRHL league play when the Orono Apple Blossom Shop met TD Evergreen head on. It was a high scoring, seesaw battle which saw the locals press on right to the end with a whole team effort despite the 5-4 loss. Lucas Leech started things off for Orono on a Paul Bridger offering. Next, Brock McGill slid one by TD's goalie on a pass from Jonathan Picco. Andrew .Fudge played a good game in net for the Fibergrate crew while Mike Hisson whistled a couple over the net--illegal curve maybe! Matt Fuller skated very hard this game. Kenny Jackson, Josh Dobson, Blain Cox, Denis Beenen, Kevin Bourke, Robyn Henderson,' Sarah Donnelly, Doug Deboo and Matt Smit made some nice plays. Final score of the game was 4-1 Bowmanville. Before they knew it, McGill had stuffed another one in with Picco and Greg Howe collecting collecting the assists. Heather Maitland finished off Orono's scoring from Dustin Armstrong. The Apple Blossoms swarmed TD's net and had many scoring opportunities but just couldn't put in the tying goal. Excellent effort by all team members. Apple Blossoms clipped by TD Evergreen
