Wednesday, January 26, 2000 ) Big Brothers receive a power boost KENDAL NEWS by Joan Anderson J Last year we had that incredible incredible amount of snow which fell in January - this year it's the VERY cold temperatures! Combined with the wind, we've had some severely cold weather this past week. My horses were wondering if they were, ever going to stay out at night again! They certainly were far tnore comfortable in the barn than outside it. Rev. Don Stiles, supplying for Rev. Dr. John Sullivan during during his holiday period, again conducted the service at Kendal United Church. Dora MacDonald again did a super job greeting the congregation as Thelma and Jack Westlake are still recovering from the aftereffects aftereffects of the flu. "Praise Our Maker" was the gathering hymn this morning, after which we sang the beloved "Come In, Come In and Sit Down". After the Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon, Psalm 139 was the responsive reading. In the Children's Moments, Rev. Stiles asked what their first word said was. Most of us expected the regular "Mama" and.Dada", but Erica Lewis surprised surprised us with "cupcake". She was at a family reunion, wanted a cupcake but none were to be seen, so she asked for one! God's first word was !'Let", from "Let there be light...". Rev. Stiles has left us an intriguing question for next week - we are to find out from the Bible what Jesus' first word was.< Why don't you readers look it up as well, and we'll all find out next week whether we were correct? The choir, although lacking three of its members due to other commitments, gave a moving version of "He" a song once recorded by Elvis in a gospel series. Grant McConaghy read the Scripture. Passage from Matthew 5: 13-20 before Rev. Stiles, proceeded with the Message entitled "The Bandit of Joy" - from the Third Beatitude - "Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth". A bandit is one who steals, and Rev. Stiles reminded us of a bandit in the American South- West whose very appearance was so intimidating, that he never had to shoot once in his 29 stagecoach heists. This bandit bandit wore a hood over his head to disguise his identity, so it took the law quite a long while to catch up to him. His biggest weapon was the fear and terror he instilled in people. When the law finally caught Black Bart, everyone was astonished to find that this fearsome, incredibly intimidating bandit was none other than a quiet unassuming pharmacist by the name of Charles E. Bowles! Fear had rendered his victims paralysed, putting up no defence whatsoever. whatsoever. Perhaps Fame or Fortune makes life paradise. If so, Hollywood should be wonderful. wonderful. Neither or these are the key to Happiness either. If we allow it to, Fear can steal peace of mind and security from us. Those of us who have God to be with us at all times find great comfort and peace of mind in this. He will help us through anything, however hard it may be. The words of the third Beatitude surely are true, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." Jean Hoy and Phyllis Lowery took up the Offering, and service was closed with the sung Lord's Prayer, "O Jesus, Joy of Loving Hearts" and then Now In Peace". Refreshments and a variety of tasty squares were served to an appreciative congregation by Pat Atkins and Peggy Frank after service. Many of us • enjoyed the fellowship shared at this time.
