< Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, February 9, 2000 - 11 KENDAL NEWS by Joan Anderson This was Rev. Don Stiles second last Sunday supplying at Kendal United Church for Rev. John Sullivan who is on his well-deserved vacation time. Thelma Westlake was back at church so she and Dora MacDonald shared greeting duties. It is so nice to be met at the sanctuary door by such happy smiling faces. Jack Westlake is still under the weather but hopes to be back next week. "Come and Find The Quiet Centre" was the gathering hymn this morning, and then we sang the familiar and beautiful beautiful "Morning Has Broken" for the Opening Hymn. After the Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon, we read Psalm 147 Part 1 responsively. In the Children's Moments, the children were eager to tell us what their names meant. After the children exited for Sunday School the choir sang their anthem for the week. Lay Reader for the day was Don Peddar who read the scripture from Matthew 6: 1 - 15 as a preface to the Message about the fifth Beatitude. The Message was entitled "The State of the Heart". "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." It is no coincidence that today's subject of the heart also came up in Concerns when we prayed for a niece of Debbie and Don Peddar and Laura and Jim Savage, Joanna Savage (Dan's daughter) of the Ottawa area who is due to . have open-heart surgery soon. We _ask God to care for this teenager and help the surgery to go well and bring her back to full health. After the Prayer of Commitment we then sang "Will You Come and Follow Me" as the Hymn of Commitment, then "the Lord's Prayer" and closed with "Go Now In Peace". Many ladies of the congregation congregation supplied sandwiches and squares while several from the choir made chicken soup to have with our meal. Don Peddar always makes our coffee for this time and his efforts as well as those of all those providing treats are much appreciated. Concerns and Celebrations Ruth Andrews has undergone undergone "surgery in Toronto and continues to recover in hospital. hospital. Dorothy Hellebust is continuing continuing to undergo anti-cancer therapy. Jack Westlake is battling the aftereffects of the flu at home. Joanna Savage is to undergo undergo open-heart surgery. Joyce Boudreau is to enter hospital in Oshawa on Tuesday for several days for tests. Cameron Lewis had surgery surgery this past week. Chad Switzer celebrated his birthday on Saturday January 29. Jennie Falls celebrated her birthday Sunday February 6. Don Peddar celebrated his birthday the same day. Family Bowling Night and Plouse warming for Grant McConaghy was very well attended. High Score Bowlers were Laura Savage with 185 and Don Peddar with 180. Rev. Stiles enjoyed the evening but said that his right arm could hardly move the next morning. White Lakeridge Health Bowmanville 47 Liberty Street South Bowmanville, ON L1C 2N4 HOW HAS CHIROPRACTIC STOOD THE TEST OF TIME After almost twenty years of practice and countless thousands of Chiropractic treatments to my patients, I am still amazed every day at how well Chiropractic adjustments work. Many patients respond positively to Chiropractic when all other forms of treatment have failed to get results for them. In many cases, the explanation as to why Chiropractic is so effective for certain people and their particular condition remains elusive. The first theories as to why Chiropractic works were put forth by its founder, D.D. Palmer, over 100 years ago in Port Perry. His theories on how misaligned vertebrae, he called subluxations, pressured and imitated the nerves causing malfunction and ill-health are currently being studied and are well supported in the scientific literature. The premise that vertabral misalignments could cause nerve pressure, pain and dysfunction has been documented in the literature since the time of Hippocrates. Many ancient practitioners used to re-adjust bones and joints to remove symptoms and restore health. They were called bonesetters. Records indicate that some were employed by the royal families in Europe hundreds of years ago. There has been, in the past and present, a great many negative influences influences from people speaking out directly against Chiropractic and bone and joint manipulation in general. Although some of the bad press has come from irrational people who are afraid of having their bones and joints adjusted, adjusted, the most vehement opposition has always come from the medical fraternity. fraternity. Their motivation comes from the power to control and- monopolize the hèalth-care industry. In the United States, the twelve year long anti-trust suit brought against the Chiropractic profession by organized medicine evidenced evidenced this most recently. The Chiropractors won the lawsuit. There are still many battles going on to defend the philosophy, art and science of Chiropractic. How then is it possible that Chiropractic survives against powerful powerful opposition, no public funding for its schools and patients having to pay out of their own pockets for treatments? The basic and obvious answer is that it always was and continues to be a very effective, inexpensive and safe form of treatment. The Worker's Compensation Board studied Chiropractic and found it to be very cost effective in the treatment of worker's worker's injuries and in many cases the worker returned to work much faster and the treatment cost less than if they were treated medically for the same conditions. As far as the safety of Chiropractic is concerned, insurance companies, that cover Chiropractic malpractice, indicate how safe Chiropractic is by the very low premium that they levy. Malpractice premiums premiums for Chiropractors have stayed the same or declined over the last twenty twenty years, i.e. less than $1000.00 per year per Chiropractor. Statistics indicate indicate that chiropractors deliver millions of adjustments each year with very few injuries or complications. If Chiropractoc is considered to be safe and cost effective, how can one explain how and why it works? What do Chiropractic adjustments actually actually do to help the body heal so efficiently that cannot be done as well by other means? In simple terms, all joints have smooth gliding surfaces that are seated together with some lubricating fluids and a small space between them, much like a sealed bearing. If a bearing is overloaded by weight or misaligned by Impact it may overheat and quickly run out of lubrication. The steel parts will rub together and break down. If a wire supplying electricity is in close proximity to the bearing, i.e. the insulation is touching the bearing, bearing, the heat and deforming pressure will eventually cause the transmission of electricity down the wire to be interrupted and a short circuit will result. This process can and does happen to the nerves around the inflamed sub- luxated joints in the spine. They almost touch the small joints and bones of the vertebrae as they exit the spine. The increased continuous load of tight, short, overworked or injured muscles, which attach to the bones of the spine, cause the vertebrae to move erratically or get stuck in a position which causes the joints to grind. Osteoarthritis is the result over time. Nerve malfucntion, pain and ill-health will build as the nerve no longer sends the same normal electric messagedo the many cells of the body that make up its organ systems. This subluxation degeneration happens anywhere in the body where a nerve is close to a swollen joint or overly tightened muscle. It is extremely common in the spine and can occur at any age and to any animal that has a spine. What causes the tightened, contracted, shortened muscles that misalign misalign bones and joints creating nerve interference? Accidents, over exercise, exercise, postural fatigue, repetitive work (assembly) and strong emotional states, like worry, depression and fear can all be contributing factors. Evën changes in normal body chemistry, like toxicity (poisons, drugs, viruses etc.) and lack of the necessary vitamins and minerals that help muscles function normally can cause major muscle spasms. While it is true that the body in its ability to heal can rid itself of many subluxations that odeur, it can obviously not correct the more serious misalignments, especially when it is being stressed in different ways at the same time. A Chiropractor, by giving giving a precise, direction-specific, re-aligning adjustment, can rest "the bone's position and restore its proper play and movement with its neighbour bone and joint. This very fast thrust adjustment, which only, Chiropractors have mastered, causes the muscles attached to the bone to reset or release their tension. This stops the misalignment action and reduce the load to the joint surfaces. They now cool down and proper lubrication and oxygen is restored between the surfaces, which stops the swelling and inflammation. This reduces the pressure exerted on the nerve. If the muscles are treated with exercise alone or physiotherapy with no thrust to reset the bones and joint, the treatment is less effective and may not last.
