( Qrono Weekly limes, Wednesday, February 9, 2000 - 3 " From Around Home Calling all by Roy Forrester Last week I wrote about the Ministry of Natural Resources 1000 acres west of the Village and just how fortunate we are to such so close by. Step out of the house and within minutes you are there. That was seven days ago and I'm still of the same feeling even with seven afternoons being there. Let me tell you, you do not need knee-deep snow for X-country skiing. This is especially so in the Ministry lands where the terrain is fairly flat and X- country skiing becomes a touring event rather than up and down hills or breaking for corners and to reduce speed. You can settle-in for a comfortable relaxing outing being able to enjoy the scenery and deep breathe of fresh air. In the past it had been racing up and down hills, dodging trees and carving comers especially in the Ganaraska. Age no doubt has made a difference. 1 like what we have so close to home. As far as birds are con-, cemed we do have some sightings to report and we can start with the former tree nursery lands with a count of seven Ruffed Grouse perched in a grove of 30 foot maples on the edge of a hardwood bush. On being alerted by the sound of two taking flight from the maples to a plantation plantation of Spruce we were able to count them along with the five others. During the spring and summer season you may well have heard the male bird drurp with their wings. It sounds like a tractor motor reeving up and closing closing down. The sound is often in the area of this sighting. The bird feeds on poplar and birch buds this, time of year both of which are available in the forestry lands. The birds make a dainty dainty four-point print in the snow. These were noted in the Spmce plantation. Royal Lee, back Leskard way, reports a small flock of Juncos. Blue Jays have been active in a number of areas we have visited from the Skelding Road area, over Mosport way and west of the Village. At home the Chickadees and Red- Breasted Nuthatch have been flying in and out. Of course that is to the feeder'. Spent an interesting hour this week in the Orono Times morgue root ing out some information on the former Orono Hydro Electric Utility which came into existence in October 1938. Like anything else new it was three years in debate before the sum of $8,128.40 was put on the line to purchase thé Orono system from Ontario Hydro Electric Power Commission. Commission. It was expected to be paid for in less that six years. Of course it had to go to a vote of the people with the result being 132 yes' and 16 'no* *. The familiar names were Charlie Miller, Perc. Lunn, Bill Armstrong, Bill Riddell and Ernie Dent who became Orono's "Mr. Hydro" for at least forty years of the 50 year life span. It was Ernie Dent who asked, "Does anyone know of a hydro system that had gone bankrupt?" Of course the answer was "No" and likely todoay it is still "No." By the way we had "Feminine Hockey" in the Village with the line-up including Enid Cobbledick, Ethel Stark, Olive Brown and Ruth Goode in goal. What about the coaches Ron Patterson and Jim Powers. The above names are no doubt familiar names with the old timers of today. Girl's hockey has been a sleeper for many years since 1938 but the recent surge is not some thing new for Orono. That's it for this week. love to write Kidwriters, for kids who love to write, is now accepting accepting registrations for its February program for children children aged 9 to 12.
