Tyrone talents A capacity crowd was on hand for Tyrone United Church's Chicken Pie Supper last Saturday. The Supper was held at the Tyrone Community Centre, and was followed with a goods and talent auction. Auctioneer, Arnot Wotton got a price of $31 for 1/2 dozen butter tarts. Holding the goods are, left to right - Mariam Koene, Arianna Stavrokos, and Catherine Koene. The combined combined efforts of all present helped raise $7,000 for the church. Letters (continued ) MPPs to downtown Toronto lawyers had a chance to speak. But were they heard? After the last speaker, Councilor Spatafora introduced introduced a long, rambling motion that was very hard to follow, particularly as he kept interjecting comments of his own into it, Each Councilor spoke to the motion, which had obviously obviously been discussed ahead of time. Councilor Brenda Hogg was obviously not happy with, it, but the most courageous speech came from Councilor Joe DiPaola. He knew the motion on the floor was far from what the residents wanted and suggested, everybody' to stay for another three hours, if necessary, necessary, to arrive at a satisfactory satisfactory solution. The Mayor actually cut him off, and began his own remarks. DiPaola protested, protested, pointing out he still had the floor. "You still have the floor, but you're finished" finished" was the Mayor's outrageous response. He then proceeded to hustle through a vote, warning that if another motion was introduced after that, it could not be in opposition to it. Was Democracy served? It's sad that our elected representatives representatives do not seem to listen until a large enough number of people gather at a public meeting and refuse to go away. Even then, it's only lip service. The people do not get what they came for. Take an example closer to home: the Durham Region Transportation Master Plan Study. I responded to an ad asking for names of individuals who would like to participate participate on the Community Advisory Council (CAC). When the information package arrived, describing the organization of the Study, I found that everything everything had been pre-deter- mined. What categories of the public would be on the CAC, what kind of work they were to do, when public public forums would be held and what they would discuss. discuss. Is this public participation participation or public exploitation? exploitation? Designing a public transit transit system that people will actually use is not an enviable enviable task. If you guess wrong, you get something like the TTC. They don't get the riders they need because they don't provide the service the people want. And how often do they ask the public for advice? Sustainable development and usable transit are the keys to planning livable cities that do pot gobble up our remaining countryside. Let's ask the public, and keep on asking, until we are sure we know what they want.
