Orono Scout Daniel Adams oils the wheels of his cub car just before Monday's Cub Car races. Top cars from Monday's race will advance to the District finals. From Around Home . by Roy Forrester It finally happened It generally happens, on a daily basis, that I sip coffee at the Orono Cafe with a couple of Bills. One, of course, is Bill Bunting while the other is a Perryman, who incidentally, incidentally, along with his wife, are taking up residence at the Seniors complex, off Station Street. The first words out of Bill Bunting on Monday was, "it finally happened." Of course the question had to be "what happened?" happened?" "I saw .a turkey, a single single turkey about to cross the road," came the answer. Bill has been travelling the roads of Clarke and Darlington in search of a glimpse of a turkey and is envious when someone states they have seen a flock of fifty. It would appear the single bird was as good as fifty, but there is no doubt Bill will continue to be out for numbers. But in Bill's search for turkeys he has come across another sighting of Northern Shrike, his second second for the year, and the third we have been able to report in this area this winter winter season. Often they are looking for small birds at feeders this time of year. Off north in a couple of weeks, no doubt, and with some great luck one might sight a Loggerhead Shrike in late spring coming up from the south. Bob Rotz, back Kirby way stopped off for a bird chat stating he and Joanne are just about to take off, permanently, for Nakina. Bob and family have been bird watchers for years and on mentioning the north, started reciting a list of birds they were to enjoy and that included the Pine Grosbeak as a favourite. I'm sure Bob's list will change some and be just as interesting. An area at this particular particular time to visit if interested in water fowl would be Presquile Park where the birds are now covering the water edge in the thousands. thousands. They are expected to remain this week and well into next week. f Orono Weekly limes, Wednesday. March 29, 2000 - 3 J NedAtA, by Lee-Anne Leslie This March Break a group of four selfless travellers went to Haiti, a third world country, country, to help out and give support. support. It was a great success. Not only did these travellers help many people in Haiti, but now they have gained lasting memories, experiences experiences and relationships that have touched their hearts in a special way. This trip was supported by the Haiti Outreach Program which started this year at our school. Spring is here and the March Break is over. Students are back in the swing of things. There are classes to attend and many extracurricular activities in which to participate. One extracurricular activity which just started is badminton. And what about the Rainbow Trout. They are up the Wilmot Creek now and for an easy sighting they can be seen on the south sluesway of the darn at the south of Orono. They are there in goodly numbers. numbers. Take a peak. On mentioning the Wilmot Creek it reminds me of the meeting last week relating to the future use of the 900 plus acres of Natural Resources lands west of Ochonski Road and as well the future for the dam at the south of Orono on the Orono Creek. To say the least it was well attended with at least one hundred and fifty in attendance and this number number in itself assures the local public is going to have some play in what happens. happens. One would have to say that Marg's editorial last week on this matter hit the mark. Certainly the Ministry reps and those of the planning consultant were open in their discussion. discussion. Future meetings are to be held and the public's view-point is to be heard. What I find interesting about the area is the diversity of many natural environments, side by side from one area to another, another and another. RECYCLE The teachers running this activity are Ms. McBain, Mr. O'Connor, and Mr. Byrne. Practices are Mondays and Wednesdays. Practices are not to be taken lightly: they are a full workout for the body to get participants in excellent shape and bonne forme (for the French Immersion students). Their first game was on Tuesday, March 28th at St. Stephen's challenges Durham Christian School. On April 5, 6 and 7th the production of "An Evening of One Act Plays" will be presented. presented. Cast and crew are busy setting up for it to be a big success. There are six one act plays: Here We Are, Louis and Dave, Custard the Dragon, Moonlight Sonata, The Other Family, and Elevator Moments. It starts at 7:30 p.m. sharp,- so be there or be square.. At this time of year, the Grade 8 students from our feeder schools are visiting St. Stephen's Secondary and shadowing Grade 9 students for a half day. It is a preview for all to see what life will be like at St. Stephen's when they join Our community. Next year we shall experience both gains and losses as we welcome many newcomers but lose many graduates from our Grade 12 and O.A.C. class as they embark on the next step in their lives.
