V liililiiiiM; From Around Home ^ by Roy Forrester J On Friday Donna reported that two chick An interest in the workshop workshop last week on a new bird house design consumed consumed all thought of time to the point that the weekly weekly column was missed. The fact is I did have a topic to write about along with notes. More of that a little later. I just have to start off this week on being 'outwitted' 'outwitted' by Chickadees on one instance and a large persistent grey squirrel in another. We will start off with the grey squirrel. This bushy-tailed creature has, over the past, been a constant constant diner at the front bird feeder and no doubt was the cause of but a few birds flying in for a snack. It was off to Morrison's Hardware here in the village village foi / something to change the feeder from a squirrel diner to a bird diner. It took only but a few moments for the purchase and even less time to attach it as a deflector on the 3/4 Inch pipe. Would it work? That question would have to wait for the morning and Donna, an early riser, would have the answer when I arrived In the kitchen for breakfast. The answer came that the grey had been trying for two hours to reach the feeder with no success. For another half hour it. continued it's attack and no doubt is now carrying some bruises especially to the head. Every once In a while it would take another slanted look at the situation followed followed by anotlier attack and a blow to the head. But the 'never-say-die' grey finally assembled all its energy and catapulted up the pole over the deflector deflector to catch a strangle hold on the feeder and success. It called for a miner relocation of the deflector, a simple and easy operation operation and the grey has been thwarted in dining at 6 Mill Lane. Now for the chickadees. Once again I was trying to attract chickadees to nest in a bird house in the backyard. Chickadees like to nest in punky wood and have been doing so in some of :the dead poplars way back of the house. These trees have fallen down and are not available for the birds. Knowing full well that they like pmiky wood, 1 added some three to • four inches of crushed wood into a bird house and waited. waited. to see if that could bring success. adees had been busy all morning going in and out of the box. I was quite excited to feel that the punky wood experiment had surely worked. You have been missing all the action, she said. They go Into the house and come out with something whitish in their beak and fly off. On checking the house it was for sure that the birds had been busy for most of the punky wood was gone. No doubt to another site more to their liking. This Will take more thought. Possibly lining a birdhouse with punky wood. Dave Watkins, south Orono, who earlier this year reported a Red Headed Woodpecker now states it is a Flicker. No matter still a good sighting. A week ago last Saturday morning it. was an interesting trip to King City attending an event at the Eaton Hall Campus of Seneca College for the official official opening of an Interpretive Interpretive Hiking Trail. The invitation came through the Oak Ridges Trail Association who along with the Outdoor Recreation Class of 2000, Seneca College, were jointly involved. involved. Not only was the event interesting, so was the trip in. It being most unfamiliar territory for me. I did arrive on time. What a beautiful place with spacious grounds, tucked away in a mature forest and on the shores of a Kettle Lake. The mansion goes back to the early successful successful days of the Eaton family and spendour abounds. The trees in the forest are majestic, rising tall and stout into the sky. The forest forest floor was covered with green. Periwinkle no doubt imported from Europe • prior to the turn of the century. century. The ceremony was held at the lakefront colonnade congratulating the students students for their dedication. As well Professor Jack Graham spoke of the importance of holding a concern for the environment. environment. "As goes the environment environment - so goes mankind. " The Interpretive Trail was most informative as to life within the forest and has been developed on. a portion of the Oak Ridges Trail. The presentations were well. arranged and well displayed in full colour.
