Regional tax decrease The Region of Durham passed their largest tax decrease ever, last Wednesday. - Finance chair, Councillor Brian Nicholson attributed the decrease to good management, management, and assessment growth. Regional Council unanimously unanimously passed the 2000 Current and Capital Budget at $222.5 million budget, which represents a reduction of 1.26%, approximately, $10 per average household. That average houshold will pay $1,126 property tax to the Region of Durham this year. The largest budget increase went to the Police Services Board. The hiring of new 20 officers, putting a helicopter helicopter in the air, and capital requirement for a new Whitby Station have increased the police budget by $2.8 million this year, a 4% increase over last year. The 2000 police budget is $71.9 million. Durham's share of Greater Toronto Area (GTA) pooled costs was reduced from $925 million in 1999, to $894 million million this year. This is money Durham contributes to social housing and social assistance costs across the GTA. Affecting the revenue por- (continued page 5) Funding approved for band festival The recent approval of a $35,000 Cultural Grant, is great news for the Great Canadian Town Band Festival. "This grant is a great boost to our aim of building the Great Canadian Town Band "Festival (GCTBF) into a major international annual event," says organizer David Climenhage. "We hope to enjoy some of North Americas best bands this year and in years to come, right here in the village of Orono," said Climenhage. Festival organizers, who have been meeting regularly over the past year, were encouraged to apply for the Cultural Attractions Funding from the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Tourism, by one of the major bands featured in this year's Festival. This they did after a Millennium Grant from the Federal Government was turned down. Under the terms of the grant, *30 per cent must be paid back from festival revenue. revenue. Also $20,000 of the GCTBF budget must be spent on promotion. Over 20 bands have agreed to participate in this first ever GCTBF, to be held on June 30, July 1 and 2 right in Orono. The bands to be featured , tyre some of the best brass bands in the country. The weekend will kick off with a BBQ and Military Tatoo, on Friday evening at the Orono Fairgrounds. Performing the Tattoo will be the 48th Highlanders of Canada, the Governor General's Horse G uar d Royal Regiment of Canada, and the Cobourg Concert Band. A Victorian Ball, featuring music played on authentic Victorian instruments will be held at the Orono Town Hall, (continued page 5)
