Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 26, 2000 - a j Engagement, Anderson - Dawson Pamela, daughter of Richard and Joan Anderson of Kendal, and David, son of Gord and Gloria Dawson of Elizabethville and Pat Dawson of Niagara Falls, announced their engagement on Thursday, April 6th. The wedding is planned for August 2001. Pam also celebrated celebrated her 20th birthday on Sunday, April 9th. Congratulations to you both! From Around Home by Roy Forrester If you had 40 Bluebird nesting boxes and you estimated estimated five minutes each for a physical inside inspection it would take a total time of three hours and twenty minutes. That's how long it did take even though I had not made any estimate as to time for the boxes are spread out over a considerable range in the former Clarke Township. Forty boxes there are of. which twenty belong to Royal Lee with the remainder remainder being available, rent free- from the Shop at 6 Mill Lane, The area covered takes you to the Kirby area including the School and Museum, jumping to the Eighth Line Road, Skelding Road east from Leskard Road, to the Clarke/Darlington Boundary, Mosport Road and finally a hike through an unopened road allowance allowance between Concession 9 and Regional Road 20 west of Hwy. 35. Now I'm not complaining complaining about all this for I do enjoy the outdoors.and, at times, even being by myself. When I look back at the route I have to wonder how it was done in a period of five minutes a box. After all there was driving time and on Skelding Road a somewhat somewhat hilly hike and then a hike up and back on the road allowance between Concession 9 and Regional Road 20. Of course the main purpose is to see how Royal and I are doing in Look who's special... Her first half century! Love, the boys on the porch attracting Bluebirds in the forty boxes. The Lee boxes are off to a quick start with one recording of à Bluebird egg in the nest, a Swallow nest partially completed and to the disdain of Royal a House Sparrow with its nest completed and which left the box with my approach. There were two other boxes with nests partly completed. Royal does have an edge in that his boxes, having having been weathered for a number of years, are more attractive to the birds than the fresh cut wood from 6 Mill Lane. But wait until. next year when the grey will begin to show. Well what about the Forrester boxes. It is a near wipe-out with the exception exception of a completed Tree Swallow nest in a box on Skelding Road west of Leskard Road and a partial nest on what we can call Cochrane sideroad east of Hwy. 35. I do have hopes in this area for Cochranes do have cattle grazing in the fields and the road allowance ni an ideal placement for the Bluebird boxes. It just so happens when I was inspecting the boxes I sighted a female and a male Bluebird quite close to a cbuple of my boxes. Here's hoping and I don't have to compete with Royal and his homey homes in the area. the outing was not all Bluebirds for we watched two turkey Vultures circle , about in effortless glide, a IT PAYS TO ADVERTISE Love our children-- slow down, watch the ROAD WATCH® road. Next card party: Wednesday, Wednesday, April 26 at 8 p.m. Region embarks on water meter replacement Swallow taking building material into one of our boxes and a Meadow Lark taking a short flight out and back into the grass. The first blooms of spring are still with us in the yellow-orange of Coltsfoot and tucked low along a fence row were two small patches of Trilliums ready to flower from their bud period. Spring indeed is upon us. I do find there is some excitment in undertaking the survey and recording activity at the boxes. In most cases birders do visit their boxes on a two to three day cycle. Once a week will have to be my limit. It's enough for the first year. The Regional Municipality of Durham is about to undertake undertake a water meter replacement replacement program for its Orono customers. The upgrade work, was scheduled to begin on April 25th and continue until late June, 2000, will include the replacement of the existing meter with a new one, and the installation of a small "Remote Reading Device" on the outside of the premise. A Regional Employee will perform installation of the upgrades, which are being done at no additional cost to homeowners. The employee, carrying Regional identification, identification, will require approximately approximately one hour to perform the necessary work. Upgrade work will follow this simple procedure: • A wire, similar to a telephone telephone cord, will be neatly run from your water meter to an exterior wall of the home. (The wire will be rtin to a location nearby your, hydro meter, or to the front side of the house) • A 6mm hole, to be sealed upon completion,, will be drilled to allow the wire to exit the home. • Upon completion of the first two steps, a remote reading device (a flat black 7 cm x 8 cm box) will be connected connected to the end of the wire where it exits the home. The benefits of the upgrades are numerous", including improvements to the efficiency of the reading and billing process and enhanced customer service. The upgrades offer many benefits to our residents" states Gerry Harness, Manager, Maintenance Operations. "In the past our Meter Readers required entry into customers homes once each year. Because of the Newcastle Community Church Sunday Morning Worship 10:30 a.nu 390 Mill St. North (North at lights, first right to end) ~ AMPLE PARKING - Preaching this week Rev. David Chisling "Doing Well. Thank y ou for Asking" upgrades, they will now be able to access the necessary information from the Remote Reading Device, located on flie outside of the premises." Additional benefits include the ability to detect minor water leaks in plumbing facilities, evident by the rotation rotation of the small red diamond shaped dial located on the face of the new register. Detection and elimination of leaks will keep the residents' bills to a minimum.
