Juvenile girls are tops Sports Editor Rosey Bateman National Power Skaters' season draws to a close The Ganaraska Wolves juvenile girls volleyball team captured provincial gold in London two weekends ago. The National Power Skaters major tykes ended the season as 'B' runners-up in their division . The Orono team took on Courtice Health Centre in a best of three series which saw game one end in a 3-3 draw. Sean Bargent had two goals while 'teammate, Randy Clugston added a single. Courtney Elsôn had a strong game for the Power Skaters coming up big with a number of remarkable saves. Orono claimed a 3 -2 victory victory an game two with Jordyn Moore potting two goals while' Spencer Cole netted a single. The entire team pulled together together defensively to keep the opponent's scoring output to a minimum. In game three, the Health Centre simply 'over-powered' the Orono club crushing them. 9-3. Robert Van Grootel, Clugston and Bargent scored for the hometown club. With both clubs tied, the 'B' champions were determined determined by the goals for and against during the series, which saw the locals placing second to Courtice Health'Centre. Congratulations to the National Rower Skaters on a very successful season. Ganaraska Wolves volleyball Apple Blossom Shop ends team captures The Ganaraska Wolves of the Ontario Volleyball Association juvenile division, recently took home top honours honours at the Juvenile Girls Provincial Volleyball Tournament Tournament held in London, Ontario. Three area girls including Melonie Allin of Orono, Sara Hartmann of Kendal and Krista Klawitter from Bowman ville are members of the Wolves volleyball club which draws players from Pickering to Belleville and Lindsay to the north. With this win, the girls are now preparing to compete in the national volleyball cham pionships being held in Winnipeg May 12 to 14. Based on a series of tournaments tournaments held all year long, the the teams were seeded with the top 16 seeds eligible to compete at provincials. The Wolves were seeded number one in the province going into the tournament. They won their pool defeating London Forest City, Primrose Elites and Waterloo Tigers advancing advancing to quarter finals where they defeated York Region Stingrays. In the semi-finals they beat Windsor Northshore before downing the Hamilton Seekers three straight captur ing provincial gold. Stacey Gordon of Qshawa took home the Evelyn Hollick MVP award for the second year in a row for outstanding play, leadership and ability. The Ganaraska Wolves coaching staff consists of head coach Tom DeJong of Bowmanville, Lyn Lowery former phys. ed. teacher at Clarke, Craig Matthie of Solina, and Jason Cliff from Blackstock. We wish Melonie, Sara, Krista, and their teammates all the best while in pursuit of the Canadian national championship championship title. season as'A' Orono's Apple Blossom Shop played their third and final playoff game on Saturday morning in Bowmanville against Liberty Dental. '. Even though 1 the game ended in a two-all tie, Liberty Dental scored the greater num ber of goals in the series, therefore claiming the 'A' championship. Tyler Skelton and Josh Flynn both scored for Orono with Greg Howe, Johnathon Picco and Skelton assisting. Fibergrate Canada loses their bid for 'B Karen Riekard of Bowmanville signs with U of Wise. Badgers It was announced yesterday yesterday that Karen Rickard of Bowmanville has signed a letter letter of intent to play ice hockey for the Badgers and will attend the University of Wisconsin beginning the fall of2000. This might be of interest to the local girl's hockey scene as Karen is a former player of Newcastle United Girls Hockey. Rickard, a right-handed winger is currently playing for the North York Junior Aeros "AA" team, one of the top squads in Canada. With the Aeros, Rickard has .seen . action against some of the top U.S. collegiate hockey teams. Prior to her time with the Aeros, the Bowmanville native played with the Goulding Park Rangers midget "AA" team (ages 16- 17) for two years as assistant captain tallying 18 goals and 17 assists in 55 games. She also served a two-year stint as assistant captain with the Scarborough Sharks "A" team (ages 14-15) after spending spending two years as captain of Newcastle United Girls Hockey at the "C" level (ages 11-13.). Rickard also captained her Bowmanville High School team the last two years and has played on the squad since ninth grade. "Karen is a .strong, explosive explosive skater and' a great competitor," competitor," says coach Julie Sasner. "We expect her to make an immediate impact on our program. She seeks challenges challenges and continues to raise her level of play every year. We are excited for her to join us." Rickard becomes the third Canadian to sign in U of W's program history along with current Badger, Kendra Antony of York ton, Saskatchewan and Meghan Hunter of Oil Springs, Ontario. Orono's Fibergrate Canada atoms lost a well-played - 'B' championship final game to Hutton Transport. Although Orono was sharp, they were narrowly edged out 2-1 in a very close contest. Josh Dobson scored Orono's lone marker assisted by Adam Wood. Fibergrate players and coaching staff should all be congratulated for a most successful successful year. Throughout the season, goalies. Andrew Fudge and Mike Hisson were exciting to watch. The defensive ebrp, Sara Donnelly, Robyn Henderson, Justin Westerink, Kenny Jackson' Jonathan: Koerssen and Brien Konopka ruled the blue line! The explosive offense consisting' consisting' of Adam Wood, filain Cox, Josh Dobson, Doug Deboo, Andrew Fudge, Matt Smit, Mike Hisson, Mad Dog Beenen, Matt Fuller and Kevin Bourke were very productive!
