At a special ceremony at Clarke on Thursday, April 27, 2000, attended by all of the school's 500 students, Clarke received an Honourary Membership in the War Amps of Canada and an Honourary Membership in the CHAMPS (Child Amputees) program.. Art Fyles, President of the War Amps' Toronto Branch, who presented the awards, said that over the past dozen years Clarke students, staff and community members have raised more than $10,000 to help amputees, with more than half of the funds being collected in the past five years. "This has been such a good school and we appreciate what these students students have done," he added. "They have helped us to provide' provide' artificial limbs, wheelchairs, wheelchairs, walkers, and other equipment which, amputees have used to live full, active lives." "The students do all of the work on the War Amps and CHAMPS campaign each year," said Principal Leigh F a c e y - C r o w t h e r . "Involvement in the War Amps is a tradition at Clarke. When you arrive as a new principal, it's the first thing you hear about, aijd our stu school. "We have our own ceremony every year on Remembrance Day, with help from our War Amps veterans, and they also visit our history classes to talk to the students about the realities of war." For the past school year, OAC students Kelly Holmes' and Steve Gulab have led the War Amps campaign, by organizing fund-raisers such as car washes and sports events. "I think it's a good cause," said Holmes, an executive executive member of the Student Government. "They do so much for kids. Who's to say that down the road one of us won't need their help?" "It's a tradition here that we always support the War Amps," confirmed G.ulab, the Student Government's Prime Minister. "Seeing how much they help the community, it's the least that we can do." A special addition to the ceremony was Annelise Petlock who sang the War Amps song. She is a member of CHAMPS and the daughter of former Clark» teacher Randy Petlock who started the first campaign at the school to raise money for the War Amps. The War Amps fund raising raising is a Clarke tradition which appears to have many more years ahead of it. Some serious farming is happening as a result of lots of sunshine. The ground is quite dry, but not very warm yet. A lot of the spring grains are planted. Alf Millson, at time of writing, is seriously ill in Bowmanville Hospital. Grace Smith of Màrnwoôd enjoyed a drive through the country to spend Faster with Sally Planner of Rosedalq. Our Good Friday service viewed the crucifixion from the point of view of a workman workman or soldier* played by Rev. Seli. The choir was accompanied accompanied by Jacqueline Vaneyk and Sharon Trudeau. Easter Sunday saw a full church responding to the Good News. The choir processed in while Rev. Seli gathered the children to decorate decorate the cross with flowers. The anthem was Awake, Arise, with a piano and trumpet trumpet (Norm) accompaniment. Lilies and roses to decorate the church were given in memory of loved ones. Sunday,' Apr.30, special music was provided by a trio, Gail Flasiuk, Jane Koene and Sheryl Hunter, who sang a lovely Easter hymn, 'Joy Comes with the Dawn (found in Voices United). Jacqueline Vaneyk was presented with a rose bush and a copy of Fire and Grace, to thank her for leading the music for the last eight months. This coming Sunday, May 7, we will be welcoming new members by baptism and confirmation, confirmation, Elizabeth Chidley will be presiding at the organ. Enniskillen Church Salad Supper is on May 6, from 4 p.m. on. Tickets may be bought at the door. $10 for adults, $5 for children. It is always a great supper, and a chance to visit. Tyrone Church is holding a special service to. honour Long Sault Church on June 4. Ideas and contributions are needed, so there will be a meeting on Wed. May 17 at 7:30 to pass on any info you may have. Our church will be again having a Farmers Market on the Saturday of the Durham Countryside Adventure in September.
