May 17, 2000 - 3 DURHAM REGION The Orono United Church Women held a 'so long' Tea, last Thursday for Patricia Russell, who will be leaving the charge with her husband Mervyn at the end of June. Patricia (R) is joined by Norma Long, whose husband led the Orono charge for 23 years. by Roy Forrester J Every week I always wonder where to start with this column. The decision came quickly - "in our own backyard." The chickadee is a patient mother, still sitting on six eggs which should. hatch this week. On Sunday who should arrive none other than the pair of Great Crested Flycatchers. Already they have inspected inspected their nesting box and are busy looking for food in the trees. They are also busy with their vocalization. vocalization. Donna reports a good selection of birds at the feeder. "They are all there, 1 ' she states, even to the White Crowned Sparrow , that has been making its 1 presence known this year, generally feeding on the ground. Another bird making its 1 presence known is the Indigo Bunting showing up at the Schoenmaker's in mid-town Orono, also at Elva Reid's, Doug Ferguson's, Hwy. 35, as well as other feeding stations stations in the area. Definitely a bunting feathered out in metallic blue 'and when located, sings out high, up on : a dead tree limb. ; Out on the nesting box trail!, aecompaefed "by Don Lycett, it was Bluebirds, Bluebirds at a number of our stops. ■ Unfortunately ■ Royal lost one nest of four eggs due to unknown circumstances circumstances but with the pair of birds still present and building a nest in an adjacent adjacent box. ; The count now stands at two nesting pair and one pair completing a nest for both Royal and myself. Tree Swallows are showing up for both and with Wrens taking a real liking to the Forrester boxes in occupying five. One may be a double. We 1 sighted Bluebirds at five sites and chalked up a Brown Thrasher, the elusive elusive Wrens, Meadow Larks, a King Bird, brightly coloured Orioles and a possible possible dark-phased Savanna Sparrow. The event is organized by the Thickson Woods Heritage Foundation who own the property following a purchase a number of years ago., If you are up for an hours drive, Presqulle Park, down Brighton way, is offering bird walks, bird banding and evening programs programs both May 20 and 21. There is a lot to explore at Presquile along the lake- front and through a couple of wood walks. There is a charge per car.
