May 17. 2000 "^ww^**»*^»** BFGoodrich* Tires Trans-Am Series at Mosport on weekend The BFGoodrich* Tires Trans-Am Series makes its only appearance north of the border this weekend, May 19- 21, at Mosport International Raceway north of Bowmanville, Hosting the Trans-Am Series as part of their Victoria Day holiday celebration, celebration, the legendary Mosport track will be a battleground battleground for serious racers. Mosport is a racer's track. It has long been recognized as one of the most challenging venues on the Trans-Am series schedule. Measuring nearly 2.5 miles long, featuring featuring 10 turns (including the famous, off-camber, down-hill turn two), Mosport separates the men from the boys. "Mosport is like one of those roller coaster rides where you strap in, hold your breath and hold on," says defending Mosport champion Brian Simo. "Last year it was a light to the finish and 1 was definitely holding on for the win. I expect nothing less from this year's race." BFGoodrich* Tires Cup points have become a precious commodity in the past few faces, with several drivers losing losing points to on-track penalties. penalties. The driver that can keep his nose clean on the race track and keep his points will be in good shape for the season season ending driver's championship championship award, the BFGoodrich* Tires Cup. Heading into Mosport the top five are: 1. Chris Neville, Ford Mustang - 77 points; 2. Brian Simo (2 wins), Qvale Mangusta -.75 points; 3. Paul Gentilozzi, Jaguar XKR - 66 points; 4. Lou Gigl.iotti, Chevrolet Corvette - 62 points; 5. Tomy Drissi, Ford Mustang - 51 points. Mosport is a tough track to master and few BFGoodrich* Tires Trans-Am Series drivers have done it. In fact, only two active drivers have won here in a Trans-Am car: Brian Simo (1999) and Paul Gentilozzi (1996). And only three more have won at Mosport in a World challenge car: Lou Gigliotti (1991, 1995), Chris Neville (1992) and Leighton Reese (1991). In addition, there are two Canadian drivers that look to be factors in the weekend's activities: MaryBeth Harrison and Monica Kolvyn. MaryBeth Harrison, one of the few Canadian drivers entered in the Mosport weekend, weekend, is making her Trans-Am debut. She is also the first female competitor in the series since Deborah Gregg (1994). They cannot absorb more than the fundamental. skills. Do not demand too much of young people. • • Teach sportsmanship and fair play. • Establish the behaviour we expect from players on the field at practice and games. • Being "on the wrong end of the score" does not make us losers. • Don i waste the player's time. They are at practice to follow an organized coaching coaching plan, not to be lectured. • Lots of positive reinforcement'is reinforcement'is important. Do you like to be yelled at? Neither do our players. , • There isn t a #1 on the team. Treat every player as an ■important part of the organization. organization. There 'll be no "star syndrome'? • Keep practices interesting. • Use all players to demonstrate demonstrate skills. • Be positive and try to find ' something to compliment each player about. Send players home feeling good about themselves. • Get to know the parents. • Coaches should be certified. • Treat players the same way you 'd like to he treated!
