I know Dorothy Tennant knew how to drive, because she would yell at her husband 'Nip' from the grandstand, and he did as he was told. Mary Lawrence from Ohio trained a couple of horses for me, and did a great job. Women are fine caretakers caretakers of horses. Years ago they had a driving driving club in Orono and I know O.W. Oscar won the race if I recall correctly. I almost missed mentioning mentioning the most important person; person; the blacksmith. The only real blacksmith I ever knew was Les Reid down on Centre Street. His was the last house on the street, and if you went bye, you'd gone too far. Les could not only 'shoe' horses, he could build, weld, or sharpen anything. The first time I took Wil Lor Amy to Les to have new shoes put on her, I was told not to bring her back. She would put all her weight on the leg Les was trying to put the shoe on and it was hard on his back. Everytime she would need new shoes, I would take her to Les to have her shod, and each time he would say, it was the last time. He shod her until I quit racing her, and almost all my horses after that.
