May 3L 2000 ) By Glenn Legault Murder, transvestitism, aliens and rock-and-roll: All in downtown OshaWa! By: Glenn Legault For most of those people in their 30's and 40's, spending at least one Saturday night at a local cinema for a midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a right of passage. You now have the opportunity to relive that experience by attending a live performance of this well- known '70's era musical. The Hourglass Theatre Production's presentation of Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show is currently running. running. The Hourglass Theatre Production attempts to hold true to the movie version and accordingly, a degree of familiarity is apparent. While this affords few surprises, the clever use of sight gags, human props, and wordplay injects refreshing spontaneity into the production. Unfortunately this adherence adherence to the familiar introduces some shortcomings. For example, the diminutive Alex Valois, playing the part of Frank-N-Furter, is fully able to provide the necessary vocal expertise but is unable to capture capture the menace and darkness that might be expected given the Tim Curry portrayal in the movie version. Happily, Valois' remarkably expressive face and corresponding gestures gestures compensates for this. Similarly, Todd Rogerson's Rocky is much like the movie version. This young man's. washboard abs provides evidence evidence of an extensive physical physical workout regime, alas, at the expense of his vocal coaching. Steven Verwoert (Brad) and Erryn McWhirter (Janet) provide an excellent cover version of, the original Brad and Janet. Erryn has captured the naïve and ditsy film version Janet extremely well; however Steven fails to come across as a true clork- Brad that fans of the movie love to hurl abuse at. The roles of Riff Raff and Magenta, played by Micheal Munrow and Elizabeth Gosling respectively, are departures from the movie- scripted adaptation presented here, and it works to an advantage. Both of these performers hold incredible promise for the future. Munrow's Riff Raff is funny, sardonic and can sing like crazy. While Elizabeth takes Magenta over the top occasionally. This young woman has an awesome awesome vocal talent. Columbia, as portrayed by Kristen Hare, can both sing and dance well. She also provides provides an awe-inspiring hissy fit. A degree of pity afforded to this young woman's parents is appropriate. Mike Burley's performance performance in the roles of Eddie and Dr. Scott is a dichotomy. As Eddie, he provides a very nice motorcycle-punk; however, his Dr. Scott is tortured and his faux German accent painful. Tim Beaven who holds his performance very true to the movie version's Narrator adequately adequately fulfills that role in this production. Perhaps one of the most fun parts of this performance is the antics of the Phantoms. These kids are obviously enjoying every second of this production and the chemistry they have going is working well. Future audience members are encouraged to occasionally occasionally divert their attention from the central action to see what games the Phantoms are playing. playing. The Hourglass Theatre Production of the Rocky Horror Show offers an interesting, interesting, fun set that works well. A fabulous band enhances the remarkable vocal talents of this cast. Seemingly the Musical Director, Kari VanderKloot, is an 18-year-old high school student. If she can accomplish accomplish this magnitude of performance performance at that age, her prospects for the future are enormous. In short, this band rocks! If for no other reason, see this show for the music. The Hourglass Theatre Production company is a new theatre company that shows great promise. It is obvious that the cast is having a great, time while performing this challenging musical.
