( Qrono Weekly Times» Wednesday» June 7, 2000 -13 The Soccer Game by: My no Van Dyke A few weeks ago, I went back to the small town where I was born, St. Anna Parochie, Friesland, in The Netherlands. There was a very important important soccer (they call it football) football) game on and of course it seemed the whole town was out to see it. I have never found soccer too interesting and 1 have to admit that I have never really watched a complete complete game. This is somewhat embarrassing since I even helped coach soccer for a year when our son played. My uncle, Harm, is a devoted soccer fan and I agreed to meet him at the game. I looked forward to walking walking there, even though it was raining. The soccer fields used to be part of the same farm were my father grew up, so I walked down our old farm lane and through the field, making note of where the old farmhouse used to be. I noticed a crowd of about five hundred people watching the game. Suddenly, a man with a stack of leaflets walked quickly toward me, I figured he was trying to sell me something. something. "No thanks!" I said in my best Dutch. He continued to walk beside me and 1 could see that he was getting quite upset. Then I caught the word "betallen" which means pay money and realized there ; Was an admission charge. In Canada, you'd have to pay people to watch a soccer game,-1 thought to myself... 1 ..suddenly realized that I had no money on me and quickly apologized and walked back to my aunt and uncle's house. I got some money (3 guilders, about $2 in our money) and returned to SUBSCRIBE TO THE ORONO WEEKLY TIMES $25.00 a year. the soccer field. Now the game was well under way and of course there was no one collecting money! It took me almost half an hour but I finally found the ticket seller behind the home team bench enjoying the game with his friends. I gave him the money and he seemed quite surprised that I had returned. I watched the game and before long I was starting to enjoy it. The crowd really gets into the game, taunting the players and of course the referee. Much like a local hockey game. I , found it strange that when the home team scored, a large contingent of fans rushed onto the field to congratulate congratulate the scorer and then rushed back outside the field. In the end, the right team won, my hometown team and I found myself just as jubilant as the other fans. It was a different story for the losing team though. At the end of the game, so many of them were lying on the field weeping that I seriously considered considered calling 911. About fifteen fifteen minutes after the game my uncle and I started walking walking home. We found the losing losing goalkeeper alone with his head on the top of a fence post (at least he wasn't lying on the wet grass anymore). My uncle went over to him, put his arm on his shoulder and told him that he had no reason to be so upset had played his very best and had nothing to be ashamed of. When we got out of earshot, my uncle told me that it was in fact his fault, he played badly.
