Residents speak against exotic animal rezoning Thirty-six Tamblyn Road residents signed a petition stating they did not want another exotic animal property property in their area. They feel Scott Creed's r'ezoning application application has just brought fear, anger and stress into their neighbourhood. This was in response to an application from Creed, to rezone his 1.86 acre property at 150 Tamblyn Rd., to allow for the housing of exotic ani- ■ mais. Creed runs the animal education program for the the Jungle Cat World, on the 6th Concession, and discovered he was in contrav ention of the Municipal Exotic Animal Bylaw Bylaw when he kept zoo animals on his property overnight. Creed's plan, if he gets the proper zoning, is to purchase some of his own animals to domesticate, and take oh the road to be used in his educational educational programs. Creed wishes to build two enclosures on his property to house these animals. Peter Klose, of Jungle Cat World stated at Monday's Public Meeting that while in support of Mr Creed's ende- vour to follow a career in wildlife education, they were in opposition to thé location in which he is pursuing it. Area residents had many concerns with the rezoning application, not the least being water quality. Current configuration of the Dam requires that stop logs be removed to accommodate accommodate the flow from a major storm event. This worked well while the Nursfery was in operation, since MNR had staff on site at all times. Due to the closure of the Nursery, MNR staff are no longer available on the property property to remove the stop logs in the event of a major storm. The fixed weir structure, proposed by the Gartner Lee (consultants hired to study the dam) would maintain the water level in the pond at current current levels during baseflow periods, (between storms). During high flow periods, the fixed weir will be designed to pass as much , flow as the existing contrpl structure with the stop logs removed. Gartner Lee's report will be filed for public review, a requirement under the Environmental Assessment Act. MNR is working towards having a final design ready by the end of July. When MNR held their first public meeting dealing with the Mill Pond Dam, on March 23rd, 2000, over 200 surveys were handed out, seeking the public's input in this issue and the crown land with their six water management structures. Of the 58 responses, 63% wanted the existing dam repaired. In addition to constructing the fixed weir, the current proposal also includes repair and resurface the dam's concrete concrete deck, install guide rails and railings on top of the dam, and install appropriate signage. signage. Crown land The MNR's interests in Orono are threefold at this time. Besides the making the • Continued on page 7
