Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, June 28, 2000 - 3 Motor Madness Information babyville returns to Bowmanville Ron Whitelaw pulled, his modified truck to a 'full pull' in Saturday's Truck and Tractor Pull at the Orono Fairgrounds. It was raw horse power as the modified truck and tractor classes competed competed against each other in the Motor Madness events. It was a different kind of horse power that took to the track in the evening Demolition Derby. The event was sponsored by the Orono Fair Board, who were very happy with the good turn out for the event. Information Babyville, a program geared towards mothers and their babies up to 12 months, will return to Bowmanville following a well received session held in May. From Around Home by Roy Forrester After receiving a fax from Mort Hallowell, Campbell Road, Hope Township, it was off and away in the hopes of seeing what is now called a Great Egret formerly known as a Common Egret. Three trips to the Hallowell pond has yet to provide me with a sighting but there is still hope. The Hallowell's were interested in whether the bird, some short in stature to the Great Blue Heron and white in colour, was a rarity to this area. Such a question always brings out Jim Richard's 'Birds' of the Oshawa-Lake Scugog Region. The bird is indeed a rarity to this area with but a few sightings over the years. The sightings sightings that have been recorded recorded have happened in April and May and mid summer. The Campbell Road area south of Elizabethville certainly holds a lot of rural beauty as well as parts of the south-east. Of course the lush green grass helps. The Hallowell's pond makes for a good bird outing outing as a grass pathway circles circles the pond and is alive with a number of different species of birds. A number of Brown Thrashers were most active on the day of our visit. Another evening visit is expected shortly, I thank the Hallowell's for the invitation to visit their pond. The Jim Cochrane unopened sideroad, between between Concession Road 9 and Regional Road 20 is a most productive area for birds and as well provides the opportunity for a relaxing relaxing pleasant hike. The 66 foot strip of countryside countryside is bordered by a number of our birdhouses and the occupancy rate has been most rewarding. There are two families of Bluebirds with a total of eight juveniles out and about. The. juveniles will not colour-out until later this summer and are now fairly dark in colour with a dotted or dotted breast. A casual walk through the area brought sightings of two pair of Kingbirds, Song Sparrow, Savannah Spar-row, Meadowlark, a number of Cedar Waxwings, Orioles and a feeding Warbling Vireo and surprisingly a Red-eyed Vireo. The most numerous bird in the strip has to be the House Wren with some five boxes containing nests. The number of boxes was five. That stood until last week when on opening one out flew six to seven young birds and the same IT PAYS TO ADVERTISE IN THE TIMES 983-5301 Loyal Printing Main St. Orono 983-5301 happened at one other box. All the young made their first flight into the shrubbery. shrubbery. I wondered if I had put the young birds in danger danger but it was not long before a host of chatter developed between young and parents. Don Lycett and I ran into the best of all shows when driving into the yard of Murray and Lynda Taylor checking out a couple couple of Blue Bird boxes. The boxes are alongside the driveway. With our arrival a pair of Killdeers certainly attracted our attentions with all their antics and then some. As usual the birds had built their nest alongside the driveway and it didn't take too long to find the eggs which should now be hatched. If luck is with us we just might see the youngsters later this week.
