From Around Home by Roy Forrester Summer has arrived and that means It's time again for the Clarington Public library to start their annual summer programs! Beginning July 4, and carrying on throughout the summer, we will be recruiting Junior Trailmasters of all ages to help us find our friend Professor Biblios, who has become lost in Imagination Woods. Through reading books, Trailmasters can mark a path for the Professor to follow, as well as mark their own paths to adventure! As well, we are pleased to offer our weekly programs again this summer. This year's programs began on July 4th and continue through to August 18th, for ages six and up. The first week's theme is "Professor Biblios lost in Imagination Woods', featuring songs and stories and adventurous For this week I'll just - have to forget about the sound of birds and. direct this column to the sounds of music that eminated throughout the Orono community for a three day period last weekend. Of course it's all about the Great Canadian Town Band Festival. What a great musical note it was and from local comments the direction is "again next Before I go any further the group in charge are certainly to be congratulated. congratulated. A mammoth uncharted undertaking even for professional professional promoters was the task before the locals headed up by John Climenhage, his wife, Judy and Janet Cringle, president president of the Clarington Concert Band. Everywhere there were volunteers to carry out specific duties be it welcoming/thanking welcoming/thanking musicians, musicians, directing traffic, gate keepers, and in general just keeping the show on the road for a full two days and a night. No small chore when you take a minute to think about it. Someone surely had it under their thumb and it was fine- tuned. Let us say again 'thank you*, thank you, and once more, thank you*. I have to admit I did miss the Victorian Ball in the Orono Town Hall but from all reports the floor was full. Nowhere could there have been a better show than that presented at the Orono Fairgrounds on Friday evening. If you . missed it. it will be a miss for all times - never can it happen again with such splendour. Three renowned bands, the 48th Highlanders of Canada, the Concert Band of Cobourg and the Governor General's Horse Guard Band with the Cavalry Unit. How could one ask for more. Their individual programs, augmented augmented by a mass band presentation of music and marching and the, charges of the Cavalry units. A full two hours of musical entertainment. But this was just the start leading to the Pine Ridge Brass, just one of many delights sounding out from the new Band Stand at the library property, property, , the latter being another great project of the organizing committee. With great acoustics the stand will, one hopes, be a centre for other groups in the future for all ages. Saturday was a real fun day for music lovers with musical notes pleasing pleasing the ear between the Orono Town Hall, the Library Band Stand and over at the Salvana Gardens (former Tree Nursery), the latter all newly dressed up for the occasion. Salvana Gardens and the Grand Stand are indeed welcomed new features features for this community. Saturday evening the sounds of Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey by Swingshift brought memories memories back to those in atten- • dance that carried on into late night. Those on Sunday who heard the Yorkminster Citadel Salvation Army Band, the Peterborough Concert Band, and especially especially the Intrada Brass have heard the best. I am still amazed at the challenge that the local committee accepted and the success they have had in bringing to Orono such noted musical bands and groups and as well a bandstand bandstand with superb acoustics. It's all about sheer determination. They knew no limit. You . have to ask, "Can Orono do for Town Bands what Shelbome has done for the past 50 years for Fiddling?" The answer has to be "Why not!" Thank you for the music of the week-end and the Canada Day great parade and celebration at the Orono Park. activities.
