^ Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, July 5,2000 - 5 ) Bandstand makes a comeback This new bandstand which sits on the lawn of the Clarke Library, in Orono, was built just like the original; by community volunteers, with funds for building materials donated by the citizens and businesses of Orono. The village of Orono had a bandstand as early as 1895, when members of the Orono Band built one on the Main Street, where the Town Hall now stands. The bandstand was to be the focal point of Orono Band's weekly Saturday evening concerts. To make room for the present Town Hall, built in 1898, the bandstand was moved to a small sloping park at the "Y" intersection of Main and Mill St. Later it was moved to the Orono Fairgrounds, where it stood till it was tom down in the 1970's. Though the Clarington Concert Band had tried a number of years ago to rebuild the Orono bandstand, it didn't get off the ground till this year. A survey of the Orono businesses community, on how to spend a $5,000 Provincial Millennium grant, indicated the majority wanted it to go towards building a bandstand. When David Climenhage was approached by the Orono Business Improvement Association, and received 1/2 of their grant money, the project was revitalized. The total cost of the bandstand was approximately $8,500. Several fundraising initiatives initiatives were launched, including including a charity concert, by the Clarington Concert Band at the Orono Town Hall this past Spring. Plans for the Victorian style Bandstand were drawn up by Able Bronco, Sonbon Homes donated a lot of time and material to the project. Cedar was donated for the shingles which Mark Stapleton made on his shingle shingle mill. • Local volunteers showed up each morning to hammer nails and put the structure together. Many comments were made on the weekend regarding the Stand's great acoustics. Climenhage attributes attributes this to the all wood construction construction of the Bandstand. A committee will be formed to make sure the bandstand will be used regularly regularly to showcase the many talents this community has to offer. Subscribe to the Weekly Times This weekend I was able to make It to my friend Darrell Kennedy's cottage where we stayed for the weekend. His Grandma and Grandpa allowed Darrell and I to stay at their cottage and fed us good meals. They also let us use the boat. We were In search for some, nice sized bass because that's the weekend season opened. The cottage Is on lake Kasshabog meaning 'lake of many bays'. We fished many locations but my favourite was shallow, weedy, back bays that were only one to five feet in depth. The best bays we could find had many small islands that were under cut and lily padded covering the rest. In the locations we used top water lures and spinner baits. The results of this combination was many bass. Darrell caught some two pound, bass and lots around half to one and a half pounds. He caught his oil a rloating rapala, hula popper, blue fox spinner, and a buzzbait. I managed to hook into a giant seven pound large- mouth bass and many around a pound. The seven pounder was taken on a yellow yellow bladed, red and white skirted spinnerbait. It was caught at the entrance to the best bay we found all weekend. weekend. The other fish were taken on a tiny torpedo, spinner bait, hula popper, and a buzzbait. The interesting part was that it was so shallow that you could see when you were going to get. a bite because there was ripples on the water in a V shape that came from shore in the direction going off shore. It was a great weekend of ■fishing and T want to thank Darrell's Dad for the rides and his Grandparents for their hospitality. r I I I I I / X FIVE HEARTS 3 Pedicures/Manicures Waxing Nail Extensions Ear Candling , Eyelash Tinting Air Brushing Electronic Muscle Stimulate (EMS) Brigitte J Brown *** Gift I ESTHETIC STUDIO /lralMc Certificates g 15% DISCOUNT with coupon Acrytic/Gel Nail Set with air Brush I I 171 Mill Street, Orono, ON LOB 1M0 • (905) 983,-8169 Durham County Senior Citizen's Lodge are accepting tenders for the installation and supplying supplying of forty-one heavy-duty, brown aluminum tri-lite self-contained doors.
