Email: info9 slroman.com. The dying man by Myno Van Dyke I wasn't bom in a hospital. It was just a little one-room house with a bed built into one of the walls in the small town of St. Anna Parochie, Friesland in The Netherlands, My parents thought of their first home as a castle and were very happy there. This little house was located on a narrow street called "The Kade". The house is long gone. There is just a large slab of concrete where it once stood. Occasionally, 1 make a trip back there and I always make a point of standing on that spot where I was born fifty-four years ago. I look across that narrow little brick street and see the small canal where my grandfather, grandfather, the man I was named after, Mijntje Van Dijk, almost drowned in 1972. Even though he was eighty-four years old and lived alone in a retirement complex, he still rode his bike evety day. His eyesight and his balance were not what they once were. It was a cold, winter night, the day after New Years and he had been visiting his cousin. It was a lot darker than usual that evening since the street light beside the canal had been broken by some over exuber- Tell them the facts of life and death. It certainly wasn't that he didn't know the way. He had lived here all of his life. He never drove a car, only a bike. He wouldn'teven drive a tractor. He made the right turn onto "The Kaai" a bit too soon and ended up riding his bike right into the cold, dark water of the little canal. He was a non-swimmer but fairly tall and managed to walk to the wall of the canal with the ice cold muddy water right up to his nose. He couldn't couldn't pull himself out so he just hung onto the concrete edge and yelled for his life. Harm Postma, was a very sick man. He was dying of caliber. Postma was lying on a'small bed near the .front window window in a house next door to the place where I was born. He thought he heard someone crying "Help!" and told his sons Piet and'Miendert to go out and investigate. When they ran out they saw my grandfather losing his grip on the concrete and slowly sliding sliding into the water. They dived in and dragged him out. He had been in the canal for ten minutes. His lungs were full of water and he ended up with pneumonia. But miraculously he survived and lived another 6 years. A dying man saved a drowning man... As I walked back to my aunt apd uncle's home in a light drizzling rain, I realized that I was stepping on the same streets that my parents had walked so many times. I wondered how they must have felt, back in 1951. Leaving the security of their family and friends in this lovely little towp to strike off for the unknown. I also wondered how my grandparents felt. They probably thought that 'they would never see their children or their grandchildren again. Because of Harm Postma, I was able to see my grandfather for the last time in 1977, a year or so before he died. They wouldn't let him ride his bike anymore and his mind was no longer sharp. He couldn't quite understand what the "Canadians" were doing there. I paid him a visit in his little room at the retirement home. When I left, I walked down the driveway and looked back towards the room up on the third floor. I saw him standing in the window looking down on me. He gave me a nice wave and I waved back. In my heart, I knew I would never see him again but since that day I have seen that picture of him waving to me from his window a thousand - times. Thank you, Harm Postma. Call me to buy or sell...
