It was a cold, winter night, the day after New Years and he had been visiting his cousin. When they ran out they saw my grandfather losing his grip on the concrete and slowly sliding sliding into the water. They dived in and dragged him out. He had been in the canal for ten minutes. His lungs were full of water and he ended up with pneumonia. But miraculously he survived and lived another 6 years. A dying man saved a drowning man... As I walked back to my aunt apd uncle's home in a light drizzling rain, I realized that I was stepping on the same streets that my parents had walked so many times. I wondered how they must have felt, back in 1951. Leaving the security of their family and friends in this lovely little towp to strike off for the unknown. I also wondered how my grandparents felt. They probably thought that 'they would never see their children or their grandchildren again. Because of Harm Postma, I was able to see my grandfather for the last time in 1977, a year or so before he died. They wouldn't let him ride his bike anymore and his mind was no longer sharp. He couldn't quite understand what the "Canadians" were doing there. I paid him a visit in his little room at the retirement home. When I left, I walked down the driveway and looked back towards the room up on the third floor. I saw him standing in the window looking down on me. He gave me a nice wave and I waved back.
