Ftom Around Home by Roy Forrester It is amazing how sometimes things just seem to come together or dovetail and that did happen happen over the past week regarding the virtuoso of song and mimic, ■ the Northern Mockingbird. It's not that I saw one but things did come together for this weeks article. : It was some time ago that Donna took a phone call regarding a Northern Mockingbird and as usual recorded the name and phone number of the caller for a return call. This past weekend the note with name and number number turned up . when searching for another misplaced misplaced item. This becomes a habit as the years pass on and its search, search, search. The call came from Ann Grimes, Orono, reporting a sighting of a Northern Mockingbird by a friend in an Oshawa industrial industrial area. She well described the bird and was curious about the bird and , the sighting. The earliest record of this bird in this area and that includes Oshawa was October 20 and November 20, 1921 according to thé Jim Richard's book. The bird has been increasing hi numbers over the years to the point that one should not be surprised to see this bird of many songs. In fact one sighting was reported earlier this past spring east of Orono. The bird is in the fami ly of birds which includes the Catbird and the Brown Thrasher. They dwell in shrubby habitat and do have a liking for Multi Flora Roses and other fruit . shrubs. Never have I seen as many -Brown -Thrasher as this year in this area. I suppose it. could be that Mocking-birds have taken a cue - from the Thrasher. The Mockingbird is well named as it is notorious for its many calls, songs and its' ability to mimic other birds. In this regard there was a page-article In "Birds and Blooms" this month about this virtuoso of songs and calls. It states researchers have found there appears ,to be no limit to the number number of songs a mockingbird can pick up. Most are able to master at least 180 songs in a few months. It further states that during a mating season it may master master more than 400 songs and could run through its repertoire for almost an hour. It appears the male does most of the singing especially in the mating season. A mockingbird can imitate imitate more than just other birds. It can also mimic squirrels, frogs, crickets, sirens, bells, home alarms and even a rusty gate. According to, National Wildlife, one mockingbird near Miami mimicked an alarm clock so well it awqkened residents early St. Saviour's Anglican Church MILL ST., ORONO, ONTARIO Rev. David R. A further story tells of a woman who had received a refrigerator magnet that made bird songs when it was pushed. Sitting out in her screened porch she . kept pushing the button and within ' two days - the resident Mockingbirds were calling back with the artificial songs.
