We met either at ball games between schools or at field day competitions between schools. I can't remember which and then we went to work together at the Forestry. Norm didn't stay at the Forestry very long. He went to wcyk at General Motors In Oshawa. The pay was better and it was warmer in the winter time. He said he would retire before he got to liking the job and he did after 30 years. We shared a lot of things that wè had in common. Country music took us a lot of places together, both In Canada and the U.S.A. Norm had a great love for boxing and we would always be discussing who was the best fighter In the world, past and present, and he knew everyone's boxing record - wins, losses and ties. Horse racing brought us a lot of fun also. We travelled all over Ontario to watch stake racing and into the northern U.S.A. One weekend we went to Belleville Friday night. Greenwood race track Saturday night, Orangeville raceway Sunday afternoon ahd Mohawk raceway Sunday night. That was a hectic weekend. Norm studied the breeding breeding of Standard Bred race horses and hr knew the best breeds of studs and which brood mares to breed too. We would get the Sales Catalogues for the yearling sales and Norm would mark the pages with the most well bred and which ones would sell for the most money. He was right most all the time. Frank Stacey phoned me last week and asked who he should breed his mare to and I told hlm I wasn't sure. He said Norm would have known and he sure would have. Everything we did was fun whether it was ice fishing, travelling or just going to a turkey shoot. Norm married In the 1980's and then he had two ladles in his life. One was his wife Debbie and the other was his mother and he loved them both dearly. Two of his pals were his brother Earl and his dad Henry. They did lots of things together. Not a day goes by that I don't think of Norm and I look up and smile and I'm sure he's looking down at his two sons Allan and Fraser and smiling with pride. If I get to Heaven and Norm's standing looking over a field of race horses I hope he slides over and makes enough room for me to stand beside him.
