"When the going gets tough, the tough get going." This is certainly the case as demonstrated by ten year-old Courtney Haines, who is raising raising money for cancer research this Summer. The focus on fundraising started late June. Courtney and her friend where walking home from school, when Coumtey's friend shared she was afraid her mom would probably get cancer. "Well my t mom already has cancer," said Courtney. Courtney's mom had been diagnosed with medullary thyroid cancer cancer two years ago, and it has now progressed. The girls wasted no time, they made up flyers to distribute distribute through their neighbourhood, neighbourhood, asking for donations donations of spare change to help find a cure fqr cancer. The fundraising drive moved up a notch when the girls wore posters and went around the tables at Newcastle Community Church's Strawberry Social a few weeks ago. They raised $75 that day. Courtney's grandfather, Jack Hartwell of Newcastle, has offered to match every dollar she raises, with one of his own, up to $500. Courtney will be hosting a Tea, on Tuesday, August 8, 2000, (rain date, August 9) in Gloria Gordon's back yard at 120 North St. Newcastle, from 1 -4. Tickets are $4 each and can be ordered by calling Ellie at 987-5448, Gloria at 987-4076, or Courtney at 697-2284. Though it's been tough for the family, dealing with the effects of Cancer, Courtney, and her mom, and maybe her step-day if they can swing it, look forward to spending a week in Japan this December. The Easter Bunny left Courtney a Pokemon movie this spring, that made her the winner of a trip for 2, to Japan for a week. The movie's producers had made this prize offer in 5 of the 6 million movies produced.
