Here is a sample of the Information, which helps people prepare for the unexpected. unexpected. What to Do During a Tornado: If you are in a building, go to the basement. If there isn't one, crouch or lie flat (under heavy furniture) in an inner hallway or small inner room away from windows. Stay awdy from large halls, arenas, arenas, shopping malls and other big buildings because their roofs could collapse. If you are caught outside, crouch down in a ditch or ravine. Qrono Weekly times, Wednesday. August 9, 2000 - 13 the chief by Myno Van Dyke Two of Orono's finest citizens, citizens, Derek and Dorothy Barnett will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary anniversary on August 12th at Orono United Church. Derek, a great fellow and wonderful story teller, served in World War Two and was injured overseas. "Shrapnel" he says. Recently, Derek told me a great tale about one of my heroes, former Bowmanville Chief of Police Sydney Venton. It happened in 1934 when Derek was 15 years old. It was Halloween and Barnett was a student at Providence Public School which was just east of Liberty Street on the 3rd Concession of Darlington. The White family lived west of the school and they had a long laneway with a mailbox near the road. Some of Derek's friends felt that Mr. White was "crusty" when they came around to the White farm to visit one of his attractive attractive daughters, so a few of them decided to play a little Halloween prank. The soil was apparently quite sandy there so they had no problem loosening and lifting out the mail box and the two metres of post attached to it. The boys then climbed a nearby telephone pole and using ropes palled the mailbox and post up onto the eight strands of copper telephone wire. Then using the same rope, they slid the post and mailbox until ,it was exactly between the two telephone poles high up above the ground. The following following morning Mr, White went out to get his mail and could not find his mailbox. Eventually, he looked up and located it. It appears Mr. White had a very good idea who had pulled the prank and went into town and spoke to Chief Venton about it. That same day, Mr. Barnett Sr. told young Derek to meet with Chief Venton at the White's driveway. Derek protested, (still to this day) advising that he Was not with the group when they did it but it was to no avail. Soon all five boys were standing there trembling in front of the Chief. Venton began his interrogation interrogation with, "Who is going to admit they put the mailbox there?" All five were quieter than church mice. Then Venton added, "If it's not back .where it belongs by 8 o'clock tomorrow morning I'm going to take all of you down to the station and I won't be as gentle gentle with you there." .That evening, the mailbox was carefully removed from the telephone wires and neatly installed back at the entrance to White's driveway. Another problem solved and everyone was happy. Derek never did say whether or not he learned a lesson from this, but 1 think that the story shows how far society has regressed when it comes to teaching a few young pranksters a bit of a lesson in life. Today, the White family could be suing the five boys for everything from defamation defamation of character to malicious damage to property. Venton would be charged for threatening threatening assault and for not allowing each of the boys the opportunity for legal counsel, he would be looking at Police Act charges of discreditable conduct. The Special Investigations Unit might appear and the O.P.P. could hold a Public Inquiry on the way the Chief handled investigations investigations of young offenders. A Toronto Star editorial would call for Venton's resignation. resignation. Bell Canada would be sending the boys a bill for stretching out the phone wires and in interfering with communications. communications. The boys and their families could sue the Chief because the incident caused a multitude of emotional emotional problems in later years. So, here we have Derek and Dorothy, raised a fine family, happily married for 50 years and no sign of trauma caused by Chief Venton. Happy Anniversary folks! CAMPING!
