by Tim Rypstra Alexandra Bedard and uncle Art Trewin reminisce about the gold ring that was buried for over 50 years. In the past couple of weeks I have been doing a lot of fishing. One trip was with my cousins from New Brunswick. We went to the Pine Ridge Trout Farm. They caught a lot of fish, 12 between all four of them. Most of the fish were Speckled Trout (salvelinus Fontlnalis). The majority of fish were between 1/2 pound to 1 pound and one was around 11/2 pounds. We finished the day off with a nice cold coke. This year unlike last year 1 caught some nice size bass during camping. My Grandpa brought up his canoes for tis to use during the week. What I would do is paddle to the other side of Pigeon River to the far shore. 1 would cast either a hula popper or a Heddon Tiny Torpedo Into the shallows. When the lure hit 1 would let It sit there and a nice bâss would bite most of the time. When the sun goes dowii the fishing would get really good and the lure retrieve would have to change to a more faster pace. The best retrieve I discovered was a constant retrieve with a popping motion of the rod tip. The trip exceeded more than twenty fish which I released except two fifteen lnchers and a chunky 19" hawg (largemouth bass) that took me and the canoe for a ride. I . also caught and Released many above two pounds. The salmon run is under way in the Wilmot Creek. Some are already past the Hwy. 115 bridge. On August 6 my friend Shaughn Caswell caught a nice 25 lb. Chinook down by the C.N.R. bridge. On August 7, I returned to Wilmot to see If I could catch any fish. 1 ended up landing seven salmon all over the 20 lb. mark. I managed to hook many other but was unable to beach them. Have a great week of fishing fishing and have a try for the salmon. Use a strong hook, a couple of weight's and a bass power bait worm. You'll love fishing salmon the second you hook them. When Art Trewin's sister Winn lost her gold ring in the berry patch over 50 years ago, they thought it was gone for good. Winn (Trewin) Morrow lost a gold ring with her initials engraved inside, in the berry patch at her family 's farm north of Hayden in the spring of 1947. The ring was a gift from her brother and sister-in-law, Art and dune Trewin, in appreciation appreciation for being a bridesmaid at their wedding the previous year. • In subsequent years the berry patch had been turned Durham Region over to pasture and grass land, and back to garden. This past spring, Art, now 86 years of age, was tilling the garden and caught sight of the gold ring. Art knew immediately immediately it was his sister's ring that had been lost over 50 years ago. Art and June gave that ring to Winn's daughter Alexandra Bedard this June at the annual Trewin Family Pictlic. Alexandra was very touched with the story, and was delighted to have the ring which had belonged to her mother,' who passed away 21 years ago.
