8 Orono Weekly limes. Wed 1 lev h y. August 16, 2000 The word at the CPL celebrates 2000 Sydney Summer Olympic Games! "Swifter, higher, stronger," That's the motto of the modem Olympic Gamps, and this month, in Australia, the largest number of athletes ever to compete for the coveted coveted gold medals will take those words to heart. From their fairly humble beginnings in 1896, the Olympic Games have caught our attention in a way that few other sporting events can. They are amazingly extravagant, expensive to hold, lucrative to win, and prestigious to host. They are everything both good and bad about sport and spectacle spectacle at the dawn of a new millennium. millennium. Huge sums of money are involved, and controversy dogs each and every event, it sepms. Yet millions of viewers tune in daily, and more than a million visitors are expected expected to attend the Games in Sydney. Perhaps the attraction of the Olympic Games is just this: that for a brief while we get to see the power of the. human spirit, the driving force to be swifter, to jump higher, to be stronger. And perhaps it lifts us beyond our everyday existence, and gives us a glimpse of what our potential truly is. We at CPL wish our Canadian athletes the best of luck, and, regardless of your eventual placement, we know that you are all golden in our hearts! New main branch for CPL This past July, sod was cut for the new main branch of the Clarington Public Library. The new facility will be built onto the west side of the Municipality of Clarington's Administration Centre, on the site formerly occupied by an LCBO store. The new library will be a multi-level facility, designed with the demands of 21st century information provision provision in mind. It will replace our present, somewhat cramped main branch, which opened in 1965. Construction will most likely start in April, 2001, with the grand opening slated slated for early 2003. All of us at CPL are very excited by this project, which will put us at the forefront of library services in the years ahead. Plans for the new building can be seen on display in the foyer of the Town Hall. Off the shelf Some suggestions from the Information Staff...
