( Orono Weekly Tlmea. Wednesday, August 23,2000 -3 r by Roy Forrester Had the opportunity Saturday morning to attend an Open House held by Dufferin Aggregates at their Mosport Pit One south off Regional Road 20. One could, truthfully say, "it ain't like it use. to be* this gravel operation. Those tractor-trailer gravel trucks you see coming coming and going on the Highway are carry some 35 tonnes of one form or another of aggregate. Pit No. 1 is some 200 acres in overall size and at first sight is well dotted with giant storage piles of aggregate and sizeable conveyors. conveyors. Sam Jeater, plant manager, manager, outlined the process from stripping the overburden overburden and top soil through to the aggregate material removal, its washing washing and screening! Everything is automated automated through a central computer computer from the time the raw aggregate is processed through a Jaw crusher down to 3 inches, then screened into two surge piles, one sand and one stone. The two elements are blended together and transported by conveyors to the washplant via screens and a crusher. The finished products are stockpiled, again using conveyors and stackers. At this point it is ready to ship. The plant operates from 6 a.m. till 5 p.rri. four days of the week. The fifth day is set aside for maintenance maintenance of the equipment. Qver six different products products are made at Pit One with most of the materials being shipped to their sister sister companies for dement, asphalt, sub-base for roads, erosion protection and other uses. The Pits' faces revealed different formations that were created some 13000 years ago during the last glacier period. During this period as the glacier melted, melted, sands, gravel, boulders, silts, and clay were left which is a major feature of the Oak Ridges Moraine. Sara Jeater outlined the plan of rehabilitation that is undertaken at Pit One creating benches at a 3.1 slope and then grassed. Native trees and shrubs are also planted. The group on Saturday were bused to Pit 3, Mosport Road, where some $600,000 has been spent over the years in rehabilitation. rehabilitation. The Pit has been decommissioned and today has lost most of its evidence evidence of being mined. It's green with grasses, native shrubs and trees and has a pond of water. Sam Jeater states that the Pit 3 plan of rehabilitation rehabilitation conforms to their soil bioengineering techniques and has been most successful. successful. Natives in this area state that Pit 3 was opened for operation at the time of the first paving of Highway 35. It is noted in their brochure that Dufferin has been active in the community community with donations to Orono Public School, Aladdin Children's Community, Orono Arena, a Major Tyke Boys Hockey team and a local baseball team. Dufferin has received many awards for Community Community Relations, Progressive Progressive Rehabilitation and for Property Enhancement.
