The paintings at Chapman East Fine Art Gallery are on loan from Hamm's niece Marilyn Knutson ofCreamore Ontario, and friend Margaret Henderson of Orono. The oil paintings in the show were done between 1952, and 1978. Frances Gamsby who was bom in Rainy River District in 1907, first came to Orono to complete her high school education. She lived with her father's cousin, Miss Ida Gamsby, on Main Street for those two years. Having completed teacher training Frances returned to school in her home town of Stration Ontario, to teach the primary, grades. In 1938 Frances married the principal at that school, Calvin Hamm. The Hamms retired to Orono in the 1960's. "Throughout all the years of their marriage, Frances enjoyed her sketching and painting," says niece Marilyn Knutson. "While Calvin wandered wandered through the autumn bush with his rifle, she would sit happily on a log, recording the scenery." , One summer Frances had the rare privilege of taking an art course at the Ontario College of Art with Group of Seven painter Arthur Lismere. The Group of Seven influence is very strong in the painting dated 1978, titled Rany Lake, The whereabouts of most of Frances Hamm's paintings are unknown. Her estate was sold at the Grist Mill in Newtonville after she died in 1997. Margaret Henderson has been unable to trace the purchaser of the vast number of Hamm's works. The Frances Gamsby Hamm show will ran at the Chapman East Gallery on Main Street in Orono till the end of the month.
