This comes quite naturally to him because he is from Tulsa, Oklahoma, When I first introduced him to my mother-in-law, the only question question he asked her was "What brand of ammo you using?" Just after I purchased my first old Studebaker, a 1956 Champion, Bubba took a quick look at it and said, " You should just drag this thing over to the salvage yard and start over". Actually, this was excellent advice but I just couldn't muster up the courage to do it. He patiently followed this with another classic piece of automotive logic, "«You should never buy an old car you can't drive home." Besides being - an American, Bubba was also a Shriner and since they are quite partial to Jeepsters we often talked about them. I told him I knew about a 1948 yellow Jeepster with no engine stored in a bam in Bowmanville. Now Bubba gave me more advice that completely contradicted his earlier statement about driving driving cars home. "You should buy this Jeepster because Shriners have lots of money and they will always buy it from you". I told Bubba that if Shriners have so much money then perhaps he should purchase the Jeepster himself. But he didn't think that would be right because of some silly code of ethics that Shriners weren't supposed to make money off of each other and he would just have to give it away to one of them.. Accepting this logic as fact, I decided to take Bubba's advice and buy the Jeepster. The owner, advised me that someday, when I least expected expected it, the Jeepster would be deposited on our driveway. Sure enough, the following spring the Jeepster appeared. Funny, how much different an old vehicle looks when it is outside in the sunlight. Previously, it was jammed into the back corner of a dark building with an old Skidoo parked across it and a "one- lunger" gas engine perched on the hood. It had an 20 year accumulation of pigeon manure that effectively covered covered the faded paint and rusted rusted out body panels. Bubba rolled in on his Harley a few days later to look at this latest acquisition. "You should try buying something something that hasn't been stored in a swamp" he declared. He then told me how I could double double my money on this Jeepster. "Sell it to one of your Shriner friends?" I said. "No, put 10 bucks worth of gas in the tank," he quipped. I didn't think it was very funny but I parked it in our back shed and after a few years noticed that it was slowly slowly sinking out of sight. "You should put an ad in Old Autos." Bubba told me. Well, I did and soon got lots of phone calls and letters. A fellow from Manitoba wanted to buy it sight unseen. Yes, the Shriners did come in their big white Cadillacs with gold emblems. Great joke tellers those Shriners, They came, they looked, they laughed, they left. One fine day, Bert, from Janetville came and looked at it. He also owned a red Jeepster but drove a rather plain pickup and didn't tell any jokes so I knew he wasn't a Shriner. "You may not like what I have planned for this Jeepster," he told me. "Surprise me," I said. "I want to turn it into a frailer and haul it behind mine." So, we dragged it out of the shed and a year later I. saw my old Jeepster at the Fenelon Falls Car Show. Now it had become the prettiest prettiest looking trailer behind a sharp red Jeepster. Last week Bubba told me I should buy a Corvette convertible. convertible. He said that every man in his early fifties should get one to feel the wind blow through whatever little hair you have left. Just one last bit of powerful fun. Ah, I don't know about this one Bubba.
