This year's Durham Central Fair recorded its best attendance figures ever, at 15,380 for the four day event. Attendance was boosted no doubt by the warm sunny weather, and a realignment of some of the Fair's major . events. In an effort to divide their eggs over four baskets, the Fair Board decided to divide up the most popular event, the Saturday night Demolition Derby. This year thé Demolition Derby was held on two days, the light trucks and mini cars smashed up on Thursday night, and the larger cars took to the ring on Sunday afternoon. The Fair Board thought it best not to leave themselves vulnerable to huge losses if Saturday night were ever to be rained out. The grandstands and portable bleachers on each side of the track were filled each night of the Fair, and for the Sunday afternoon Demolition Derby. The Fair began with the traditional parade through town beginning at 6:30 Thursday evening. The collection collection of antique cars, tractors tractors and floats led by the Oshawa Legion Pipe Band arrived in front of the Grandstand where the opening opening ceremonies took place. Short speeches were given by Mayor Diane Hamre, M.P.P. John O'Toole and M.P. Alex Shepherd. These ceremonies were immediately followed by the milking contest, which once again pitted members of the media against local politicians. politicians. This year's contest ended in a tie, ending several years of heavy losses suffered by the media team. Inside the arena, judges were having a difficult time selecting one of the three Fair Ambassador contestants to replace outgoing ambassador, Melonie Allin. Catherine Found was selected as the 2000/2001 Durham Central Fair Ambassador. Friday focuSed on kids, with 4-H displays and exhibits, and activities for the local school kids in the afternoon. afternoon. The Fiddler's Contest took place inside the arena Friday evening while the horses and ponies were pulling more than their weight in front of the grandstand. Tractors were out in full force on Saturday, with the Antique Tractor Show all day, and the Great Lakes Truck and Tractor Pull happehing on the track in front of the grandstand grandstand in the evening: Sunday's big event of course was the Demolition Derby beginning at, 2 p.m. The' Hunter show had many fine riders in the Horse Show ring, and sheep made a great showing in the Livestock Area, The Poultry exhibit was way down this year due to the inclusion of poultry shows in two other neighbouring fairs. However the Holstein exhibit was up this year. The Fruit and Vegetable exhibits were also way down this year, due to the inclement growing season this county experienced this year. Several classes had only one exhibit, which included only one large pumpkin entry. Displays inside the arena werè again very good, with a wide variety of flowers, baking, baking, woodworking, photography, photography, art work, hand crafts including once again a wide variety of quilts, and school displays. Exhibits inside the arena were down just slightly over last year however the vendor's vendor's area was well occupied, and included a fine model railroad display put on by the Soper Valley Model Rails Club. The Fair Board, the participating participating show committees, and all the volunteers are to be commended for making the 148th Durham Central Fair another in a long fine of successful successful Fair events for Orono.
