Wheels have been put in motion to open up another section of the Sidney B. Rutherford Trail. Conceptual drawings of the trail system through the ravine just west of the downtown downtown core of Orono were drawn up in the early 1990's. Permits for the actual work were issued in 1994. At that time trails were created to link with the Orono Park and Station Street, just east of the Senior's complex. A rudimentary trail was cut to northward along the ravine, but never completed. Through the infusion of « some municipal money and a gift from the Rutherford family, family, the push is on to complete this section of the trail, which will loop back to Main Street, by the flax mill. ' Municipal Works Department Staff will be doing the initial ground work to lay the trail, within the next few days. The plan is to leave the area as natural as possible. A steering committee made up of Pat Lycett, Tracey Osmond, Beryl Clark, Carol Bailey and Svjvie Parker have met with Municipal representatives, representatives, Fred Horvath and Grant Ashton to get a fee! for what work can and should be done, in order to get the maximum maximum benefit-from the natural area along the Orono Creek. The steering committee, who have called themselves 'Friends of the Rutherford Trail', would like to see local people come to a public information information get-together, on Wednesday, October 11, 7:30 p.m. at the Orono Town Hall. "We're calling it a get-together get-together because we want people to come out and meet their neighbours," says Pat Lycett. There are so many people who have moved into town since the original trail was opened, who don't even know it exists, she says. » The Committee is open for input, and ideas for the trail, and how to make the trail entrances more inviting. The ' 'Friends' share a vision that Orono's interconnected interconnected trail system will become very important to Orono's future.
