WOTTEN AUCTIONEER 905-263-2512 Hampton, Ont. LOB 1J0 4 ac Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 4> 2000 - 17 Forgiveness by R. Gagne Leskard My parents were married for 35 years, they were Christians. In those days, marriage meant commitment. commitment. During the depression, my dad worked only 3 days a week, so we were very poor. We wore a lot of hand-me- down, but we were never hungry. In order to understand the dynamics of relationship, we have to know where they two came from. My dad, Gerard, the third child In a family of ten, was sensitive, charming, handsome and happy person, person, with a good sense of humour. My mother (twin with a boy) was pretty, petite and always neat as a pin. She was authoritarian, perfectionist perfectionist with no self-aware- him that there is nothing funny about life." So, Sister Marie-Therese, my teacher, gave up a composition to write: "Why I Love Life", 1 could not find any reason. So the nun helped me to open up, and I have not shut up since. 1 My sister Liliane raised her children without love, like my mother, but contrary to her, she was very lenient and always supported her children against authority. She and my other sister, Louisette never take the time to say hello. After my father's death, my brother rarely visited my mother, even though he was her pet . My mother is now ninety years old, she is very lonely, One psychologist said, we Eire not here to be loved by our children but to make them good citizens. As far as that goes, my parents were successful, successful, and I think it is the faith they had and they gave us, which made it work. I have loved them so very much. As far as I am concerned, I have acquired good selfesteem selfesteem at the nursing school. I have talked and made up with mom and we now have a good relationship: I feel that they did the best they knew how. I learned, a couple years ago, while researching our genealogy that I was bom four months after my parents wedding. That would have increased her anger and shame. I am glad she kept me, otherwise I would have been a child of Duplessis. I also know that it takes a life time for each of us to correct our shortcomings and that is how we grow. We should never repeat in our children the hurt we suffered in child hood. Like Barbara Coloroso said: "We should treat our children the way we want to be treated when we will be seventy years old." ness or self-esteem. She came from a family who had four children in three years, two of which died from meàsles; her mother ended with a "nervous breakdown" in an institution and her dad stalled drinking. She grew ashamed and angry of her situation. My mother carried this baggage into the marriage. There was always tension around the house, lots of disagreement, disagreement, and no love nor understanding. It was very difficult for all of us, including including my father, to be good enough for her. My parents had five children, children, four daughters and one son; one girl died at age two from measles. I was the oldest, oldest, I always felt rejected and hated, I was very scarèd of her. By the time 1 was fifteen, I was very withdrawn, it was even obvious at school. The priest had noticed it, he asked me, "why don't you ever smile?" When I told my mother, she answered: "tell STAFFORD MONUMENTS LIMITED 143 King St. E.
