' » v • J Kendal Volunteers to get start Community A group of Kendal residents working to turn the hamlet's vacant school into a community community centre received a financial vote of confidence Monday from town officials. Clarington's General Purpose and Administration Committee agreed to grant $5,000 initial operating money to the Kendal Community -up cosh for Centre Centre group as well as a onetime onetime provision of up to $20,000 to purchase tables and chairs for the centre. The roll, a record of all taxes paid in the village in 1888, was in the possession of a Gertrude Bean who now resides in Nepean' The roll was' found in the possession of Ms. Bean's grandparents, William and Martha Baskerville. Ms. Bean sent the' Roll to Mayor 1 lam re this summer, summer, with a letter stating, "1 hope 1 have done the right thing in returning it to its "home" and I. hope it proves .valuable to your history." Mayor Harare turned the Roll over to the Newcastle Historical Society, at the September, 25th Council Meeting, to be added to their collection. Society spokesperson Ron Locke stated, "we will treasure it forever," The village of Newcastle collected $3,703,73 in taxes in "1888. The Roll was signed by Thomas Tamblyn, Secretary, and Charles Wright, Solicitor. According to the Roll, baker John H. Betts, of Church St. Lot #3, living on l/5th of an acre, paid $4.39 Village Tax, $6.50 School Tax, 33 cents and owned one male dog. Betts' taxes for the year totalled $12.70, approximately approximately two months income for a man working on a farm. • The Roll will be an invaluable resource to the Historical Society in terms , of verification of names, their spellings, house locations, locations, and the number of dogs and bitches in each ' house. , The Roll is available for viewing Tuesday mornings, mornings, in the Newcastle Historical Society room, in the Newcastle Community Hall.
