Music store opens in Orono ^ Qrono Weekiy Times, Wednesday, October 4, 2000 - 3 Katie Hayward plays drums while her dad, Jim plays guitar. Orono's new music centre is a family affair. For a family who has always been interested in music, opening their own music store was the next logical logical step. The Orono Music Centre, at 5331 Main St. Orono, Unit 5, has a good selection of new and used musical instruments and accessories for sale. According to Jim Hayward, the Orono Music Centre is filling a gap. People have been coming into the store and saying, "wow, now we don't have to go to Oshawa or Peterborough." After the new year, daughter daughter Jennifer will be giving guitar guitar lessons at the store. r "A by Roy Forrester^/ If I'm going to keep writing a bird column I'm going to have to get out in the field or along the lakeshore more often. So this week I have to depend on others and sure enough a few stories have eome in. I met Royal Lee downtown downtown this past week and sure enough he had a report of a Bluebird and pointed out that some Bluebirds do linger through early October into early November. It is possible that one might catch sight of a small flock three to five or six. Of late when in the outdoors outdoors I haven't had the binoculars and might have been missing such an encounter. Gerald Robinson, Orono, does some work for Len Helpard on the Clarke/ Darlington Boundary road and came up with a sight ing of a Least Bittern. Certainly it is a good sighting and indeed a pretty pretty bird with distinctive features. features. The Len Helpard pond with an island would be ari attraction for the Least Bittern and indeed it has, for Robbie has reported seeing the bird on a num- ' ber of occasions. The Least Bittern is a shy bird and the shrubs and rushes along the banks of the pond do provide privacy. But it's not as if you are going to see the bird every time. It does fly out to wade and hunt for food. Robbie did come up with another interesting story of nature and it per- ' tained to a pair of nesting swans that lived on the Helpard pond. Just as the young were hatching under the female female swan she was attacked by a fox or wolf. Duties now rested with the male but it is recognized that the male will not take care of the young. The young were taken to another female and did well advancing into the adult stage. This wasn't the case for the proud father who lapsed into what appeared appeared to be a depression and total physical col-' lapse. The bird had to be done away with. Doc Robinson just wasn't sure what had happened to the male bird, other than the loss of a loved one. There are a new young pair swimming about in the pond now and as you watch them there has to be a closeness closeness that exists between these majestic birds. I think there is a love song with the title "The Nearness of You". With that thought in mind enough for , the birds. Sunday night it was a trip into Peterborough for the opening session of the Kawartha Jazz Society, prevention week 14 4 Orono's Music Centre will take instruments on consignment, consignment, and will take special orders for books and sheet music. Every year in October, communities throughout North America observe Fire Prevention Week in commemoration commemoration of thé Great Chicago Fire of 1871. During the week of October 8 - 14, fire departments across Ontario will be focusing their 2000/2001. The hall was packed, the music great, if you like jazz, and the singer, Vivienne Williams, was everything the New York Times had to say of her - a mellinious cross between Sarah Vaughan and Tina Turner. The group of four were tops. Coming out of the hall I noted that a group will be playing in Peterborough Peterborough featuring ABBA music for those of the late * seventies., The group T understahd is also playing playing at the Capital Theatre in Port Hope. It's, the music featured in the successful successful musical, MOMMA- MIA that is still going strong in Toronto. resources and energies on promoting fire safety in the home. The theme for this year's Fire Prevention Week is "Fire Drills: The Great Escape!" This is the final year of a three-year campaign to encourage everyone to develop develop a home escape plan and practice it with their families. A fire in your home can turn into a raging inferno faster than you could ever imagine, so it is critical that everyone knows what to do and where to go when the smoke alarm sounds.
